emeleee, Glad you decided not to paint the table. From the picture it looks like it's either walnut or mahogany. You have a good start on it, now just continue with the stripping. If you aren't afraid of the chemical strippers, get the strongest you can. Go to a paint store for all your products and advice, not a big box store. I use Kwik Marine Paint and Varnish Remover. Brush it on heavy and let it sit for a while. If there is a thick amount of finish still on it, scrape it off with a putty knife. If you have already removed most of it, brush it with a stiff synthetic bristle brush. Use old toothbrushes for the nooks and crannies. Once all the finish is removed wipe it down with either lacquer thinner or acetone, again making sure you get in all the nooks and crannies. Now the sanding. Try to determine if the top is solid wood or veneer. If veneer, be careful not to sand through it. Start with 100 grit and work you way up to at least 150, maybe 180. The grits will be 100, 120, 150, 180 of a good quality sandpaper, not bargain basement junk. Before moving on to the next finer grit, make sure all the scratches from the previous grit are gone. They will show up with a harsh light held at a low angle. This is a lot of work but to get a great finish it is required. There are no short cuts here. Now, stain if you want. If you want to know what it will look like without stain, spraying some water on it will give you a good idea. Once you get the color you want, put your finish on. The final color will not be what it looks like with just stain (or nothing). The finish will change the color. For a finish use shellac (hard to work with), brushing lacquer, or a good varnish. Don't use polyurethane, it is not a quality finish. At least two coats are needed with sanding between with 220 grit. Sand between every coat of finish and the next. Good Luck

Hello mcpeeple, One thing that you could consider is the square tiles on the hearth.. Someone has put these in to compliment the other green tiles which are original. It might be an idea to look into a piece of slate for the hearth. I wouldn't paint the wood though.. The wood works really well with the green tile. The other thing you could do is lean a really large oversized mirror on the rear wall.. This will give the illusion of more space but also offer the eye another focus in the room... Maybe another small mirror or hang some pictures on the small wall between door and outside. A different pendant and slightly lower and also bring the table into the room a little more.. You may want to consider a small side table or something for one of the alcoves.. Wooden with a marble top could be nice to put the plant on and a lamp.. Something taller or so for the other alcove, to give balance but not symmetry! YES I said it... an interior designer who want's something other than pure symmetry.. It's nice to have just a little difference.. Maybe paint the chimney breast a colour with a hint of green if you want to stay light.. or a chalky darker green... Oval mirror hanging from the picture rail over the mantel and leave it bare... Dark green cushions for the dining table and some nice candlesticks... Think it is a really nice room though and I like the idea of painting... doors, skirting all woodwork and architrave... Something that stands out a little and even could be a green... One that compliments the small rectangular tile on the fireplace.. : ))

Hello Jakub, I think the grey tiles are nice and more interesting perhaps than they could be.. you might consider changing the window colour to compliment.. I do definitely prefer the darker window to white for this style house, but that's my take on it especially if they are upvc and they might not be of course but you can as some don't realise change the colour on these windows.. I can see them a dark grey or leave them as they are. Possibly think of adding some foliage.. One last thing.. I also like the brick and would leave these as they are.. They offer texture as do the tiles and so I just think you could focus on the drive and add plants. Buxus balls with some fabulous architectural styling would be magnificent.. : ))

Your bedroom sounds pretty. I think with matching wallpaper and bed cover, why not try some floor to ceiling length white sheers with a white block out blind underneath for privacy. Maybe some silver and white gold and white patterned cushions for the bed.
