Landscape ideas - rear garden

Hello expert garden landscapers - very much appreciated if you could provide any suggestions for our family garden please? We have 2 toddlers that love playing in a sand pit and mum and dad that love al fresco living! Thanks in advance.

I think having a section of the garden designated to be a sand pit would be a great idea with a perhaps hexagonal structure to add a feature to the garden and when the toddlers grow up it could be filled with play bark as another use. I'd then looks to install either a decking or patio area near the house preferably going out from the new doors (bifold?). Top the rest of the garden off by repairing or relating the lawn and some traditional boarders around the edge.

This is a difficult one. Many people see garages as a selling factor, but many are not wide or long enough for modern cars. Also, modern cars are now built to withstand all of the elements, and with anti-corrosive paint etc they can more than happily survive outside. If you do not use the garage as a place to 'store' the car then it will inevitably become a place to store everything else. From a garden design point of view think about the direction of the sun. If the garage gets most of the sun during the day then perhaps it would be better to remove it. If the area gets sun later in the evening then again, perhaps take it down. By the sounds of it you have plenty of options for parking elsewhere so in my opinion I would take it down. If the base of the garage is in good condition, you could re-purpose the area for a summerhouse or garden office or patio. With regards to the concrete and gravel garden make sure there is enough drainage and that any excess water runs away from the house, otherwise you could end up with rising damp issues. I fully understand why some people prefer a 'maintenance-free' garden with the use of concrete and gravel, but I would always favour soft planting. Yes, it would cost to remove the garage and the concrete but if you and your family get more pleasure from a family garden, then surely this is money well-spent. You should also remember that outside space in the form of a garden is a big selling point - perhaps more than an awkward garage. If you live in a family catchment area, then future buyers will be looking for a family garden. You can still include a patio and storage sheds to replace the garage, but these can be more easily disguised in to a well-designed garden. So, as I say this is a difficult question, but in my opinion I would remove the garage and create a wonderful garden that you can enjoy.

Wow, thanks for the input. Initially we discussed the idea cutting back the conifers with the our tree maintenance company when they come around twice a year. However, they showed us that just behind the conifers outer green layer is just sparse brown aged stems, cutting back the growing tips would just expose this and it would not recover unfortunately. We could cut from the top a reasonable amount (like your first image shows) but sufficient so that it provides enough privacy from line of sight when looking from the garden. I've attached some aerial views..(I think the hedges are trees have been automatically "ENHANCED" to look more fuller than they actually are!). We did consider biting the bullet, taking it all down and then starting again with new fencing and then some form of fast growing plantation (trees, bamboo etc), something that would at least give us a minimum 1 floor in height privacy reasonably quick.

I’m in a semi detached but might as well be classed as a terraced as there’s no direct access straight through to the garden. The access is difficult as everything would need to taken down a very narrow path (access for small cars to be parked in rear garages) I’ve been told there‘s a lot of manual work which is why the cost altogether is quite high. I’ve been quoted £300 per day for labour and it will take 7days for everything to be taken out completely from the garden. On top of this a minimum of 3 skips costing around £700. The garage is also quite high up and I would need a retaining wall once taken out and landscaping starts. Our budget was around £7k for completing everything but we getting quotes around £9500. 😩

Hi,

Your garden space reminds me a project I did a long time ago so I have uploaded it now. It's a family garden with a sandpit hidden in the decking (that avoids cats and foxes messing it up and makes things more grown up when it's not in use). There is also a sauna, a hot-tub, a swing and a swing seat, most of which was there but not so well arranged.

No problem. It reminded me that I hadn't put this project up yet. Somewhere there is a closer photo of the sandpit but you get the idea anyway.
