New build living room

We can't paint for a while but I really don't know what colour to go for, I wanted to keep the room light and airy the tv unit is going and TV will be on wall, rug needs replacing but think that needs to be tied in with wall colour.

Hi Ann. I'd look at elephants breath by farrow and ball. It's a greige so will tie in your greys and beiges. It also has some warmth to it which may be a factor depending on which way the room faces. You could then add an accent colour for cushions etc. alternatively if you want to stick to neutrals add different shades, textures, patterns etc and i think a little dark grey would work well if you wanted to disguise the tv then consider a darker feature wall. Is the chair also used for watching tv? If not, it may be nice angled towards the sofa for conversation?

Thanks Ann. If you have a mix of pale grey and cream/neutrals then I would consider grey walls a little darker than the soft furnishings to provide some depth. Its hard to suggest a colour remotely but try a tester of Chic Shadow by Dulux. I would also go darker grey rug with a stripe or geometric pattern contrasting with your cushions so it becomes a feature. Make sure its big enough so it doesn't get lost in that big room. I would add some black accessories and/or picture frames to avoid he room looking wishy washy. If the TV is going on the big bare wall consider adding some wall hung shelving in black or white as well or will look very lost. Hope this helps.

Hi - I agree with the others that draped curtains would look lovely. A soft grey carpet - especially one in a lustrous pile - would really bring the whole look together. Here's a couple of examples of our Soft Focus range (top pic) and our Sensation Twist range. Two different greys but shows how they can complement different sofas etc. The beauty of carpet is that it's cosy and welcoming and feels lovely underfoot especially when it's chilly!

Hi we have had a bit of a hellish time with this new build living room but after a year of many changes we've got the following layout. Main question is ... do the ceiling lights look ok not being in line with the ottoman ? I don't really know a way of rectifying this, we don't really want to get down lights or turn it in to one central ceiling light as that won't make a difference anyway .... should we be thinking about a pendant light coming down above the ottoman ? Or will this look stupid ? It was the husbands giant tv that caused most of the chaos in this room. Also any ideas for counter balancing the heavy curtains on one side of the room. We don't want more curtains or cornice boards the curtains look lovely once your in the room it's just walking in that's the issue. We are thinking a lamp between the two windows. Any colour ideas appreciated ... we are getting a little dull but we are thinking about painting wall another shade of grey with lamps in white.

You're welcome. I forgot to say re the rug, it's sometimes better to go with something that tones in with the floor (as yours does now!). If you add a rug that really contrasts it can make the room feel somewhat smaller. It just depends on what look you're after!

If you are going to move the T.V to the wall, think about what to do with the wires etc which will hang down on show. I would change the display unit at the end of the room, centralise the armchair and the mirror, ( which is not quite right - it's in the middle of the wall, but doesn't look right over the armchair ).

Get a different display cabinet to put the T.V on opposite the sofa, which will open up the entrance to the room, and give you somewhere to hide wiring.

I love all the neutral tones that you have with the sofa, cushions, curtains etc. However, I think rather than changing wall colours, all you is to bring in an accent colour, changing a few of the cushions, ornaments and rug.

We have this, charleston gray from farrow and ball in a new build lounge :) just a feature wall but love the colour changing through the day. It's gorgeous in the evening with a lamp put on next to it. We moved in July last year by the way, and painted in January.
