What to do if you discover that your children have bad taste...

The big day is finally here! Your children have finally moved out to start their new lives. But the first time you come and visit them, you can't help but notice that something isn't quite right with their interior. It might be the colour of the sofa, the music posters on the wall or or a less-than-pleasant rug that breaks the harmony.

How do you react?

What in earth is "bad taste" ? Each to their own. I can't think of anything more annoying and patronising than insisting that only one's own style is acceptable.

I won't say a word unless asked. That doesn't mean I accept their taste, only their right to differ from mine. I don't live there!

A house without flowers, to me is just a house, not a home. A room without flowers may wear an expensive ballgown but will be bereft of the loveliest jewels to set it off. All rooms need something living. Even just a single Rose or a sprig of ivy. Fill your garden with flowers & foliage. Tipsy tulips are perhaps my favourite but then I see a bowl of garden Roses & Alchemillimollis, or a glass jar of cow parsley or a jug of white dog daisies, or....

We love kids’ creativity! One of our customers told us a story about how she designed her new Totem Mill with her son who loved it so much that he used it as a part of his…space ship project. ;) We like to think that design sees no limit in age. Tylko app allows for a fun and engaging way to customize furniture - without a fear of coming up with a piece which is not functional or attractive (or impossible to built!). You can also easily visualise the final product in a space where it is supposed to be placed. Hi. Before 1.5 year ago we had a wonderful neighbours! Was really good friends and we still visiting them and they us. But new owners are nightmare, horrible. They do everything what they wont and no body can help! Build shed along boundaries without asking permission, when we was build fence at boundaries they was demanded fence at 2.5 m high. They smoking meat at weekend day time, knocking at walls in the middle of night, swearing when play games - with open windows, loud music . Just no words! We try to chat with them - but they polish and was just two answers - I do not understand and Its my property I can do what I want! Council was told its both private properties -we cant do nothing! We just wait maybe they decide to move somewhere . But its just one house in community - where bad neighbours-others are friendly and we make bbq together and do children's parties.

Hi patrina :-) So did you actually live in Jamaica for a time or where you born here? Never been but can imagine a very laid back vibe from there! It’s fantastic to chat to people from different backgrounds (sort of a turn this thread has took) as there is too much hate about to do with different cultures and race :-( It’s funny how styles change though! As I’ve said I do like mid century and have a few genuine pieces but I guess the stuff I pick now is probably an evolution of it, well in my eyes have heavily influenced the design of the pieces I like. I also like to make stuff, it’s generally a take on something I’ve seen that is either too expensive or just not quite right but nearly there! In the throws of possibly making a very contemporary concrete bench for the front of the house! It’s one of those ones that is either gonna be great or go horribly wrong.

What is bad taste? well when I moved in with my now long ago ex in 1984 he wanted a topless picture of Sam Fox in the living room. Like I said , he is an ex boyfriend and that in my opinion is bad taste!

If it's an issue of an unintentionally off-centred frame or some such, you can advise, but if 'bad taste' is defined as simply different from yours, yours is probably 'bad' to them.

If it's a boy, their partner will change everything in time anyway, so don't bother worrying.

if it's a girl, get them to sign up to Houzz.

There are always exceptions to the above. There are some design savvy males on Houzz.

This applies to everyone not just children. If we all had the same design taste the world would be a pretty dull place to live. My parents were wonderful in this regard. I had a sun yellow room at 13, It was navy blue at 16. I did it all myself. The only rule Dad set was not to paint the wood trim. I get that now. Give the room to explore their tastes it make them more rounded people.

'How do you react?'... I would be pleased as punch that my children had grown up well and managed to secure their own home. However they decorate it is up to them... it's not my house!

You can always find something to compliment and even if I couldn't I'd probably just make something up!

Definitely wouldn't mention anything as like everyone has already mentioned interior decoration is always going to be a personal thing and what one person really loves and think looks great in someone else's mind will look horrendous! At the end of the day its their own home and for them to put their own mark on it. After all perhaps for many years they have secretly hated their parents taste of decor and just didn't want to say! With interior decor there isn't any right or wrong if you like it then that's all that matters, not what other people think as its you that's living there!
