Obviously you have trimmed 90% of the rafters, so how do you take the weight that the original rafters were supporting, and the weight of all that glazing? Surely you can't take the load to the remaining rafters without using steelwork? Or does the steelwork go into the gable ends?

It's a special designed truss system we created specifically for the barn. No steel required within the construction.

Hi there, I have had a chance to chat with one of our Building Regulation officers who has come back with some pointers for you. "The cross sectional dimensions are shown on the structural engineer's drawings and the length of the beam is to be confirmed by the builder on site - It's very important that the builder confirm this length with site measurements of the actual opening (plus bearing at each end) to avoid any risk of the beam not fitting well. It will always be the builder's responsibility in general to ensure that correct materials are ordered. If the length being requested is purely for pricing for the steel rather than ordering; then the dimension of the space can be requested from your architectural designer. An alternative option would be to add in folding doors. These can be glass to increase light or made to measure bespoke doors as simple as painted MDF if you want to keep costs down. Example of MDF bespoke doors here for a previous client. Having the option to screen off areas as the children grow can be really helpful as you may not always want to all be in the same space but its great to have the option to throw it all open for gatherings and big playtimes! Hi All, I visited a garden centre during the Summer and saw wisterias planted in pots and supported by wooden poles and a bamboo lattice at the top. The lattice work was held in place by a metal bracket. Does anyone know where I can get them from? I’m attaching a few pics for reference but they are not great. Thanks, Andre
