Island or peninsula?

I'm going to knock down the wall between the kitchen and the cloakroom and will relocate the cloakroom under the stairs.
I'm of two minds about the wall between the kitchen and dining room; am not sure whether to remove it completely and have an island or remove half of the wall and have a peninsula. I think an island would be too small as I need space in front of the fridge (located on the left wall by the door to the garden) I don't want the island to block the flow from the hallway. Any suggestions how to resolve this please?

I think if you block up the back door you will have more floor space meaning you probably don't need to take down the wall to the WC.
If you do decide to move the WC under the stairs then I would still leave this little room separate from the kitchen but I would put your washing machine in there.

You could block up the back door and have an L Shaped kitchen on the side wall and garage wall. You could then replace the kitchen window with doors to the garden.
If you move the WC you would have room for an island. Personally I wouldn't bother

The door in the kitchen is the only access to the back garden from the house. I would need to open a door in the garage...something to consider.

Loving the island thanks. Feels really open. We dropped the ceiling height when it's non kitchen to differentiate spaces/zones for dining v's kitchen. We haven't got round to buying stools for island yet and not sure we will, with the dining table being so near and a toddler who likes to run around it!

I certainly agree with the comment about making the utility room door open outwards. We had a decent sized, but fairly narrow, bathroom to renovate. The door was about halfway down the long side and making the door open outwards made all the difference. So far as your supporting pole is concerned, this might be of interest - take a look at the final photo where the pillar has been boxed in with mirrors. How do you plan to use it? How many people typically at a time and each doing what? How do you want it to feel? When you're cooking, sitting on the sofa, eating at the dining table, or sat at the island/peninsula - how do you want to feel at each space? Personally, I would remove the wall between the kitchen and dining area. I still think it'll be too narrow for an island but it would be ideal for a peninsula breakfast bar (in line with the french doors).

If you are worried about the kitchen/dining being too open then you could potentially form a wall with door between the dining area and the lounge.

Depending on if you are using the garage for a car or storage then you could convert the rear of the garage into a utility (always useful in a 4 bedroom house) which could be accessed from the kitchen.

I hadn't thought of that (using the space where the cloakroom is now, as a utility room). I was planning to put the washer and dryer in the garage.
My plan was to knock down the wall and have a breakfast nook and a larder there. I'm having a really hard time trying to decide!

Could you have the utility off the kitchen? You could separate the two areas with a sliding/pocket door, perhaps mirrored so you can play with the illusion of more space. Dryer can sit on top of the washer giving you more floor area.
You could have the hob on the island/peninsula or perhaps the sink?
