Natural versus artificial lighting - which would you choose?

If you could have ONLY A) natural or B) artificial lighting in your home - which would you choose?

A) Daylight and natural sources of light (e.g candles and a lit fire)

B) Artificial light only - no windows or daylight. We're talking bulbs only!

No choice: Natural light every time. Sunlight is essential for maintaining a healthy body and the production of vitamin D to prevent rickets. Its also worth noting that there are issues regarding environments where there is only artificial light (often found in long term living in bunkers or submarines) where the bodies circadian rhythm goes haywire (it can be mitigated with simulated nighttime lighting etc but it's not great)

it depends a lot on the light levels as well, a shady darkish site would better suit artificial grass but if there is enough light for real grass then it would be real grass for me. this is not only because it looks much nicer, feels nicer but also because it helps to support the local wildlife ie attracting birds into the garden and insects and is also better for the environment. it is also untrue that artificial grass requires no maintenance, ideally it should be lightly brushed/blown once per month ( more in the autumn and spring months if surrounded by trees and also needs spraying with herbicide ever few months to keep the weeds from taking hold if maintenance is an issue for real grass, have a think about adding some wildflower turf to the area, looks stunning for the summer and needs cutting just once per year

Douglas Fir but the classic not natural and Dinesen with extra long and wide planks and soap & lye, light finish. We're looking into this but it's quite a commitment both in terms of additional cost, fitting and maintenance so currently very torn between this and engineered ash which is substantially cheaper/easier but doesn't quite seem to have the character.

I think this much glass means that the room would be plenty light enough even if you painted it black. Personally I think that white could be a cold choice especially with modern LED lighting- I would choose coloured walls but there are many whites to choose from which might appeal more to you. A lot of the paint manufacturers have helpful sites that explain the undertones of a colour which will get exaggerated in large spaces. Personally I think that some of the whites are very yellow in electric light and whites with a blue undertone can look grubby in anything less than brilliant sunshine. Perhaps you should be looking to choose a neutral instead such as Farrow and Balls Joa White or Dimity. However if you tell us more about what is going in the room I am sure that there will be other suggestions.

You can add skylights to the sloped roof sections on each side without taking down the entire ceiling. You will need your builders to create a deep plasterboarded reveal (like a tapered tunnel) leading from each skylight to the ceiling. Like this This is likely to be a lot cheaper and easier than removing the entire ceiling - plus there are almost certainly structural roof supports running across above the ceiling that will be exposed if you remove the ceiling. I would also definitely get your husband to reconsider the outdoor covered structure if you can as it’s not helping! What does he love about it? Perhaps there is something less light obstructing it could be replaced with? An awning or a shade sail that comes down in the winter?
