Need help with kitchen unit colour with tile

The lighter is Purbeck stone, the darker is worsted.

perhaps there would be a better shade of grey? I think the Worsted might be too strong now that I have my walls painted. Likely Railings on the island.

This is railings and purbeck stone on units with walls in Cornforth White. First photo is a sunny day, second photo rainy day. South facing kitchen. Hope that helps in your decision. I like worsted but would wonder if the combination of worsted and railings is too dark. I suppose it all depends on the light in your kitchen. All the colours go with your tile btw.

Update - alabaster painted oak units, oak worktop, (curved end units and worktop corners) belfast sink, 1100 stainless steel rangemaster porcelain large high gloss ivory 600x600 floor tiles, ivory grout - please see attached look book just still to decide on shade of sage on walls - deciding between F&B Mizzle, Vert De Terre, Ball Green and Cooking Apple Green... Also metro sub/way tiles on walls - whether to go for a sage tile or cream/white... The dining room area off the kitchen will have oak parquet floor which will follow through from hall and will also be in the lounge but Im thinking of following the wall colour in the kitchen through to the dining room for continuity and potentially painting the chimney brest or wall furthest away from and facing the kitchen a darker green complementary colour... I think that you need to leave a wider gap, 30cm is not wide and I think it will look like what it is, ie stopping the units so they don't get in the way of the french doors. I would go with a 60-80cm gap and make a useful feature out of it with floor to ceiling shelving. I've found a picture showing some shelving stepped back from regular depth units, so you get an idea. Another option is to use a rounded base unit if you like them and maybe put a stool or plant in the gap.

Thank you! That's the first kitchen I have seen with Worsted. How do you find the colour. I am thinking of pairing it with Railings and am concerned it could be too dark.

Hi Michelle, our kitchen isn't yet finished but the bases have been in the room for about a week so we've been assessing the colour throughout the day - it seems lighter during the day and has a good mid-tone warmth. I'm not so keen on the utility room but that's only because him indoors insisted on the dark laminate top and it's pretty grey in there! In the kitchen we're having a light granite to bounce the light into the centre of the room which is my main workspace. I'll post a daytime photo at the weekend once the fitters have done a bit more.

I love the mid grey
The lighter one is too wishy washy against the floor. The island sounds fabulous in Railings, but i fear it will be too dominant against the lighter of the colours, but would fit very well with the mid tone, not having so much of a contrast. It'll look to black and white, not dark grey, lighter grey.

Campo it was your kitchen that swayed me to those colours. Your tile is probably a bit lighter than ours. Worsted definitely works much better with the tile but I too am concerned it could be too dark. Although we have 3 windows and double doors and no wall units. Its hard to picture until its in

Hi Michelle that's lovely to know my kitchen inspired you! It sounds like you are in the final stages of a decision. When I was at that point I bought 3/4 more tester pots just to ensure I hadn't missed a better combination. I really like the colours you've picked, you will probably stick with them but to answer your original question as to whether there is a better grey I would suggest taking a look at pavilion grey, lamp room grey, Manor House grey and plummet just to rule them out.

I have pavilion grey and manor house grey, they looked a bit cold and concrete looking, though I haven't tried them with the tile. Is there anything in between Purbeck and Worsted?

Have you tried Dropcloth? It's a very warm grey tone that may not read as grey for you, but it certainly seems to during the day in my north facing kitchen.

Railings looks lovely, seems quite blue. I might try that as a quick kitchen floor cabinet paint fix (following advice from Man About The House).

I still go for the Worsted, I dislike the blues. Why not paint a much larger panel in worsted, it's very hard to make up your mind from little blocks. Just use a big cardboard box for instance! Then move it about. Good luck x

The two panels at the back are cardboard boxes.I was told to paint it on wood though for a better representation of the colour.

From your photos the purbeck does look too light and the worsted looks too dark. Could you perhaps try lightening worsted with white paint? I've never tried this myself so I'm not advocating it as such but it might be worth a try.

Campo, I agree, I need something in between. The doors are getting sprayed by the company that are doing the kitchen, there is absolutely no chance that they will start mixing to get me a custom colour, they already think I am being OTT about the colour.

It's so difficult isn't it, I can only suggest making sure you view the samples in all light conditions. My units at nighttime under the LED lights look quite a bit darker. Have you viewed the samples after dark with lights on? Which colour do you like the most out of worsted, purbeck and railings? For instance would you consider doing all the units in worsted if that's your favourite? If you are really taken with railings than I'd be more inclined to stick to the lighter purbeck for the other units.

evening light, also have manor house grey as well

very difficult, I think Purbeck is to cream and worsted is too brown. Manor house grey is too blue. I thought I was safe with that tile as there were so many tones in it. Maybe it won't even be that noticeable when the kitchen is finished and I am stressing over nothing?

I might try lamp room grey.....

Hi Michelle I was thinking about you this morning wondering if you had chosen. What's the one on the far left bottom pic? It looks very brown. I think your tile has more grey undertones in it and from the photos it looks like lamp room grey and dimpse go better than the purbeck stone and worsted. Photos can be deceiving though, what are your thoughts on it?

The darkest is worsted. We have ruled it out but the sample had already been ordered from the kitchen place so took it anyway. I think we need the cooler blue greys so I am going to do bigger cards of lamp room grey and pavilion grey. I am swaying towards lamp room grey. Just to add, those last two pictures are during a heavy rain shower and it was very dark outside, its probably as dark as we will see the colours. I will take again in brighter conditions.

Updated pictures with pavilion grey and lamp room grey. I think lamp room grey might work a bit better, but am concerned about the risk of green. It is also quite dark in some lights. They are both very light when closer to the patio door, though my island is positioned there, in railings.

These are 'Purbeck Stone' on the straight run and 'Moles Breath' on the island.
