Kitchen layout help
Comments (3)Hi Gina. Do you have the measurements? Is this a redevelopment ie do all walls and doors need to stay where they are or can they be moved slightly or removed? I'm just guessing at the dimensions of the kitchen by the size of the units but it seems a fair bit to fit in. I don't think fridges are meant to go next to ovens (may well be wrong though!) so would remove the sliding doors and have a wall of units on the pantry wall. I would also lose the sofa in the dining area and move the table a few feet up. If you want a bar I would probably also increase the size of the lounge wall so you can have it in that corner of the dining area. Could the wall on the other side of the fireplace also be removed? It seems like a party space so I'm just wondering if it would work better with 2 entrances to the lounge. Just my thoughts anyway! I love the style you're going for. Maybe have a look at howdens as well for kitchen units. I also picked up my bar off of ebay for 150 (it's a back bar with separate counter) and then painted it. Our building costs spiralled so a bespoke bar became out of the question!...See MoreDo you spend more time at the kitchen sink or hob?
Comments (12)Emma, I think it comes down to how you live your life. Do you like to entertain with everyone gathered around the kitchen island? Do you prefer to keep guests in the Drawing or Dining Room and bring everything out? And if this is a family kitchen (kids gathered around the kitchen island, or spouse sitting with a glass of wine while you prep dinner, etc.), I would tend to go with the sink in the island. Most want to face out and be apart of the action. With the sink in the island, you will do most of your prep work there. You will be able to visit, see the tv and be apart of the rooms activities. Go with two dishwashers if dirty dishes are a concern, but if you answered yes to any of the questions above, it shouldn't be. Guests who gather around the island expect a little mess and clutter. Love the look of the extractor btw. Regards, John Schuller, Evolv Design evolvdesign.com 07787 41 7722...See MoreHow to design this kitchen?
Comments (21)Hi Abby, I would suggest rotating the island unit 90 degrees in order for the seating to be just off the walkway. You now have a more contained kitchen space allowing for a more user friendly layout. With the utility room in place you have a space for dirty dishes so you only need a prep sink in the kitchen area to rinse vegetables etc. If you house this in the long counter space against the wall between the kitchen and the room next door together with the fridge you can use this counter for all your prep and storage purposes. You then have the option of a theatrical hob / oven in the island allowing for an entertainers kitchen or if you want to move the hob out of the way into the side counters you can use the island as a breakfast table / serving area for dinner parties. I would however like to see the balance of the plan in order to see the flow of the house before giving my final and more extensive answer so please do get in touch and we can work on designing your perfect kitchen space. Comments (13)Hi Sandy, Hope you don't mind me getting in touch! My name is Lucy and I'm working on a new TV series about people renovating their kitchens. We would love to hear from people in the UK who have ordered/near ordering their kitchen. The show is documentary style, with a well-known presenter who has over 20 years experience in the building trade. I wonder if this may be of interest to you? If so, please pop me an email with a contact number, budget, and brief description of timescale to Lucy.Cooper@PiProductions.tv. Kind regards, Lucy...See Moremudsi
