should a colour scheme continue from hallway into living space?

I plan on using similar tones, but different colours in each room e.g. pale blue in hall, pale green in kitchen. I have been told that this won't look right, and that I should have at least one colour which follows through each room... any thoughts?

I find that if you are using different colors in different rooms, that it helps if they are harmonious. Using a color wheel- many available online- find colors that are complementary or analogous to each other. Also using the same tones in different colors helps. For example, don't use a pale pastel in one room adjacent to a bold color.

Thank you - will do that. I have a few sample cards and am trying to place colours together that would flow nicely. I have so many ideas for my new house I'm tripping over myself trying to squeeze them all in. Need to find a style and stick to it I guess

Your house probably works at them bent as there is continuity throughout. I think you should sit down with a colour chart from just one manufacturer and pick 10 shades that all work with each other and then you will have some'rules' to apply to every room so that they all work with each other. You will likely need 4 nearly white colours for ceilings, woodwork and some walls, you will likely then have 3-4 mid tones that might even be the same colour in different shades and lastly a couple of accents make sure that all the colours work with each other. It makes choosing flooring, wall paper and fabrics much easier and purchased items can be used in more than one room. I like the Farrow and Ball colour chart although my decorator insisted on having the paint colour matched by a trade supplier. My house is predominantly painted All White, pavilion grey, Lamp Room Grey with darker Downpipe and Hague Blue. My previous house was whites and green tones with orange accents. In your case I think you need to look at what you already have such as carpets and start to form a plan.

Wow, what a big space! What is great here is that you have lots of room to play with. It really depends on what style you are going for. However here are some ideas! For the entrance way, a lovely console table would be a wonderful addition against the opposite wall to the door. Something reflective to help keep the place looking bright! This could be decorated with some accents like some bright flowers that really pop against the neutral wall. Maybe a little tray to put your keys and purse in as well! Can't see the space behind the door however maybe a statement coat hanger? Or it could even be placed in the left corner, near the double doors. For the living room space, I would keep the white chesterfield sofa and build around that. A white gloss coffee table would be great as it would reflect the light helping to keep the room bright and light, and easy to clean! https://omnari.com/shop/furniture/tables/coffee-tables/white-gloss-coffee-tables/ A wall mounted TV would look amazing against the marble wall, however if you prefer - maybe some art? Depends what kind of wood you are having in the main room. If it's mid or dark colour and a little bit rustic then that works for a hall too, as long as you won't mind if the odd scratch appears over time. If you're having something very light or smooth in the kitchen I would be cautious of having that in a hall as dirt and marks will show much more. In that case I'd choose tile.

Thanks for both your comments. Those ideas are really nice Rachel. We have original parquet flooring in the hallway, so we will be keeping that and getting it sanded (which should make it lighter once the dark varnish is removed). The carpet will be going (I’m sure it was nice in its day!). We were originally planning on stripping back the stairs to have the wooden steps and a neutral/light carpet runner. However, there are so many layers of paint on the steps (some of which we believe is lead) so we won’t be able to strip back to the wood and are just going to repaint the stairs white and have the carpet runner like you mention. I have attached some more pictures of the hallway. The main dilemma, as you say @colourhappy, is choosing a combination of colours which feels welcoming – not too dark and not brilliant white! The areas we will need paint for are: Lower hallway panelling Walls above panelling in lower hallway Stairs and upper hallway wall Picture rail in upper hall Wall above picture rail in upper hall Woodwork (doors etc) There are lots of different areas so struggling to find the right combination!
