Awkward bedroom layout dilemma!

We have recently bought our first home which is a 1960's semi detached house.

I am having a dilemma decorating our bedroom due to the awkward layout. As seen in the first picture, three of our four walls have either doors or windows (we have built in cupboards opposite the Windows) which means we only really have one wall for the bed and bedside tables, and the room is so narrow I feel like all the furniture sits against one wall. Opposite the bed is a radiator which means the bed cannot be turned round. I find the room so awkward - it is my least favourite space in our home!

Can anyone provide any interior design tips to make the room look and feel more cosy and homely? We love the bed although it is so big, so we would like to incorporate this into our design.
I would also be keen to find out what other furniture would work in the room.

Can you get the radiator moved to in front of the window?..... Should be a £250 job.

get rid of that tall dresser in the corner. get long, double dresser with six drovers (sideboard shape) and place it under the window, soft roman blinds made of linen fabric and curtains to frame the window. Hang properly scaled art on the wall opposite to the bed. put round or oval mirror over the bed headboard, add large Persian rug, animal hide or texture floor covering.

Personally I would put the bed on the left wall (left from stepping though the door), the bedside tables next to the bed and then the desk underneath the window. This then leave the "awkward" spaces for things such as a wardrobe, book shelf, a bean bag

If you put the laundry appliances under the stairs ( with fire retardant boxing under stairs/around the appliances ) you could make the current utility into either a walk in pantry or close the entrance from kitchen and open in into the bedroom as a walk in wardrobe - so you can centralise the bed better without the tall run of wardrobes - will make the room bigger with clearer walkways if it will be used by older relatives who may need assistance ?!? This way laundry can be folded on dining table then put away -if you have a utility room you might end up with piles of stuff that doesn’t move for ages !

i meant to have the bed over the existing wall and part of the alcove like this, with the blue bit being built to look like a wall, but with access through a simple door... Depending on type of bed headboard you could have recessed shelves built into the storage above and/or beside the bed to act as bedside table.

Budget permitting, matching the curtains and bed spread and adding a pair of matching and/or coordinated pillow shams along with a coordinating solid color bed skirt could make the room more formal/decorated.

Something interesting above the headboard, preferably something that reflects your family's interest -- art or something on shelving, preferably modern artsy shelving -- or even a pair of swing arm wall lamps above the headboard could be all the wall decoration you need. Choose something that would add your favorite colors to the room but, unless and until you find something you truly like, leave the walls blank.

Pressed metal wall art might be something to consider.

You likely need more drawers for storage. Instead of bedside tables, consider a pair of wider cabinets or dressers with drawers that can serve the same purpose. You might also consider a pair of his/her file cabinets for bedside tables -- everyone has documents to file away or they could just be used for clothes. I like the second one on this page.

You don't mention how high or wide the radiator is. It may be you cannot put anything above one that provides heat but see if you could add a corner cabinet or see if the white chest of drawers could fit beside the radiator or would that impede walking around the bed.

Alternately, across from the bed you might consider adding shallow shelving to the wall above the radiator and/or beside it -- perhaps something with a drop down shelf/desk.

Thanks for all your suggestions so far! I like the idea of having a chest of drawers under the window.

Unfortunately the room is so narrow that we couldn't put anything at the end of the bed as we can only just squeeze past as it is!
