Why do Crown Kitchens leave a gap between back board and work surface?

Can someone explain whey Crown leave a gap between the backboard and work surface please. I have just had my kitchen fitted which I look but due to this I feel it looks like a poor finish.
I've been advised its for ventilation, if that is the case why do they simply not cut a circular hole in the board and insert a circular grill so that the finish is not compromised?
I called Crown to be told by the technical support well you won't see it unless you bend down to look in the cupboard, my response surely you have to do this to be able to see what you are trying to get out? apparently not you just put your arm in and reach blindlessly.
