Is that a shade that you have raised from the floor for privacy?

@pete_bon_9838, @brian_impey, synthetic = plastic in the sense you use it. Polymer. Stretchy molecules. Plastic is acceptable as a material these days, mainly because it has well proven properties in a wide range of applications across a variety of the polymers blessed by the expression. Synthetic comes across more as, hum, well, synthetic? Pretend. Not substantial. Fly-by-night. Pixel imagery without substance maybe? The best plastic decking manufacturer I am aware of uses the word plastic in its name and would not dream of using the word synthetic. Come to think of it, when describing anything of substance, neither would I. Lecture over. 'night folks. :-)

I think Sonia is right with the shrubs idea as they would be low maintenance except for an annual trim. Have a search for wall shrubs, these can be easily trained against a wall or fence. This blog has some nice suggestions: https://www.janetbligh.co.uk/5-essential-evergreen-shrubs-to-clothe-a-wall-or-fence/ In addition I’m going to add Cotoneaster horizontalis as it copes with tough conditions but won’t take up much root space. The RHS list it as a non native invasive species however so i would take care to keep it in check. The birds adore the berries tho. You could also grow climbers such as clematis (many varieties) or Jasmine for eg. They need a little help to start with, a support either with wires/trellis or through the shrubs but once they get going they just need an annual trim.

I’d suggested to think through a plan for your garden. Mine was a patch of poor grass a few years ago. With a lot of help from Houzzers and a few books with suggestions for small gardens, I created a plan. Even with that and considering my Interest in gardening, I lost about 1/3 of my plants to the clay soil over a winter. I could post a picture of my favourite book with suggestions on how to plan a small garden, if you like.

Hi there, Have you thought about removing the wall and replacing with a wire and wood rail? The drop looks more than 600mm so you do need a safety rail. This would remove some of the blockiness and reduce the heaviness of the area. You could then use an armchair style of seting here and have a different sitting area in the garden. Baseline planting would also help - raised beds or large pots at the base would reduce the impact of the wall - see one of my terraced gardens here to see different ways of reducing the impact through painting and planting: https://www.elizagraygardens.co.uk/sloping-bath-garden
