Comments (15)I can't tell how old the home is from those photographs, but from the shape of the arch, it appears that it may be from the 50s or 60s, maybe much earlier. Since this room is the first thing people see when they walk in the front door, it needs to be designed as a "WOW" feature. I can't tell if you have enough room to separate the front entry from the rest of the room, but adjacent to the door would be a good place for a coat closet. To do it correctly and to make you happy, I would need to see pictures of the exterior and get some room dimensions. The room needs to be re-proportioned. That means that the fireplace mantle needs to fit the room size. Perhaps a mantle that incorporates a space above it for a flat screen TV. Properly sized crown molding and baseboard would enhance the feel of the room and make it more formal. If there is hardwood under the carpet, sand it and stain it a medium natural color to highlight the species of wood. The fireplace mantle should be the same species and color. If there is no wood under the carpet, I would recommend hardwood for a floor, not laminate. (You get what you pay for.) Since there is a radiator on the exterior wall under the window, I would replace it with a baseboard radiation heat panel, incorporated behind the properly proportioned baseboard so that it is hidden. The windows need to be framed (PLEASE don't use "picture frame" styled molding. You could use a chair rail and wainscoting all around to formalize the room even more. You need drapes for the window array that should fit the windows. The windows look fairly new, and the muntin array (4/1) indicates that the style of the house is traditional, perhaps Craftsman/Bungalow. Comments (4)Hello Albajazaj, So a good route forward is that you have clearly identified two clear purposes for the living room.. Relaxing and dining.. So that should really help you. Now you need to get a feel of where you want to sit for these activities... Given there's two windows at one side of the room you could potentially do one of two options... One is to have a dining table where you can sit and eat, with sunlight, with evening sun, with windows open etc... You can also use this table to work at or sit at where light is a primary requirement. It could also server as a social hub.. (see image below) Two tone walls make for interest and allow you to use colour like grey or charcoal which would blend with sofa but then add something lighter and chalky to give height.... Play with scale too... A mix of seating adds interest and consider how you add texture.. If you can't have wooden floor consider natural flooring such as sisal or Jute.. Equally though you could position a series of hall type mirrors (keep reading) Given the first floor proximity a large mirror such as 8 x6ft could be difficult in terms of logistics.. So smaller manageable ones can give a feeling of space if lined along the wall to the right as you walk into the room if you choose this idea... Which you could then situate a table in front for dining again like the above.... . So then you could have the sofa in the window, where you can read easily as light is beneficial here. It also means that the largest item in the room is not the first you see when you walk in as the width of that rear portion is quite narrow and I would not recommend anything more than a two seater here. You mentioned grey for the sofa so it could sit well with a colour scheme such as that above... A modular arrangement that perhaps is structured in a textural and interesting format... It is functional but interesting... The low slung wooden base is also rather nice to add a warm element to the room which compliments the above dining table and bench... In this way you're building the room up to a coherent scheme that is bright and airy... Another thing to consider is fewer pieces are better for a room that does not require a great deal.. Consider how function can serve multipurpose usage.... So perhaps a sideboard to houzz plates, cutlery, glassware. Above a drinks tray on top perhaps? This piece is long and low and perhaps if you situated the sofa to face the window ie in front of the rad wall past that door to the left of your image, with the sideboard behind it. It could have a vase of flowers etc, drinks tray and somewhere to put a drink etc, you have no need for a coffee table and you have a natural partition of the room... you see how considering fewer pieces and what are linked to creating a room that is perfectly functional with less... My specialty is the Lagom approach which is the Swedish term for "just the right amount" Which can be applied to any aesthetic... Comments (5)Hi Graham, When in doubt, it's always helpful to use masking tape on the floor to visualize the actual size of an item of furniture or in your case, a kitchen island. A standard kitchen worktop is 60 in depth and usually (as best practice) 120 cm is left between a kitchen worktop and a kitchen island. The reason for that is to provide free movement if there are 2 people cooking in the kitchen at the same time (but also if one of them is opening an oven door, for example, and therefore needs more space to back up to do so easily). In order to help you visualize, I've marked in red the kitchen worktop depth and kitchen island. However, I've left around 90 – 100 cm between the two as some people actually prefer it that way. In green would be a standard/smaller two-seat sofa. As you can see, if you wish to have sofas and a dining area in the same room, there isn't much space left if you wish to add a kitchen island. I don't know the requirements of your project but from what I can see from the plan, the kitchen should be more than enough to cover the basic needs. Hope this helps to answer your question. 7 years agoI think with your cool grey floor I would avoid the warmer tones of natural wood, why not look at a colour washed wood and white painted mix instead? The photos are of our whitewashed oak and matt white furniture, but you could have a silver grey wash instead.

7 years agoHi. It's hard to tell the exact space from the pics but you could build wall to ceiling storage framing the double doors from mdf painted in the wall colour and keeping some storage open for books etc.
I'd have the TV on the hall door wall with a sofa opposite and one in front of the windows. For extra storage have a trunk as a coffee table in either a white washed mango wood or a darker shade of grey.

Weathered Oak would work beautifully with your flooring to create a light airy aesthetic. Layering shades of similar colours create an interior with depth and interest. Textured materials will also help to enliven the space beautifully..
Perhaps as you have french doors linking two rooms, decorate the two rooms as one so they appear to be connected but perhaps offer dining and living room functions. Painting the french doors a lovely chalky charcoal with glass and brass door knobs makes a very beautiful frame from 1 room to the next. It also offers something visually dramatic...
It could be any colour or accent colour you like.. (see below about the accessories in particular soft furnishings like curtains, cushions, throws.. as you could use this as a means to decide on door colour.. Or blend with walls.. )
A linen sofa would be lovely if and when you might consider a change.. Have a look at Loaf.com There are a lot of lovely pieces that would work... I have selected just a few that I think could be ideal for your needs that are compatible with the flooring but offer a minimal scheme that you want.. You can then add to..
Charcoal or darker grey linen cushions (also think curtains or window treatments) Wooden accessories, old silvered mirrors, woven baskets.. white washed charcoals and or grey browns... Stone colours and washed greens like sage mixed with bright mint could be lovely with a darker more vibrant green just to pick out one contrasting colour that would be lovely... Foliage would be nice too with a green element.. Ceramic vases and decorative pieces......

A movable tray table or side table... It has fabulous legs and you could paint the top if you wanted to give it more accent!

TV cabinet and storage...
Consider wardrobes and or chest of drawers to be functional and aesthetically beautiful pieces for living rooms not just a bedroom.. Something like this could house the tv and can form an integral piece to your decor. Height plays a key role in creating a balanced room..
