Suggestions please on making kitchen diner

Suggestions please
I would like to knock through the kitchen into the dining room but have a downstairs bathroom in between , would really like some suggestions on how best to utilise the space as still need a downstairs cloakroom (but would prefer a shower room) I also need to include a door to the back garden as currently have to go down through the basement?? All ideas really appreciated

Hi you need someone who can visit the space, space plan, inspire, schedule the works and budget for this big job. This is a job for an interior designer/architect (not a decorator) someone who can space plan and visualise space. Whats the view from the outside looking in? Whats your budget? Would you be happy to move the bathroom into the basement space? Or plan for a small WC under the stairs? Happy to help.

Yes, professional help is a must and clarity on budget, desire to extend and who and how you want to use the space are vital.
Just from the plan though a couple of thoughts that you may have already thought. Move the shower room/toilet under or behind the stairs as its the main factor separating the kitchen and diner. Remove 2 main dining room walls that a) separate the kitchen and dining room space and b) create the corridor next to the stairs. You want this corridor to be removed and becomes part of your living space so you will need to create a new entrance to what will be the new kitchen diner. The window at the back of the current dining room could be cheaply converted to double doors to access the garden. Ed

Lovely colour scheme. I think your only problem is that it is a bit too elongated. Solve this by turning the table and rug round, short end to the wall and it will help widen the dining end of the room. I would change the blind to a mauve shade and put some big pictures with matching mauve coloured frames on the kitchen and dining room walls. A matching vase with pink/purple/blue/white flowers on the table -will tie it all together. The chair is cute - perhaps there is space at the end opposite the kitchen to put it with a little table and one of the lanterns beside it or a magazine rack? Don't get rid of the rug as it breaks up the floor space - the room will look even longer without it - I would add a small matching rug at the kitchen end too. Hope this may help.

I agree with Jonathan that removing the chimney breast would significantly increase your options for the room. I would go one step further and look into removing the small wall which separates the kitchen and dining room; I have attached a very crude annotation to your sketch to show how this would look. I personally wouldn't go for French doors if the current back door is retained. A typical worktop height is 90cm so you could place units (a sink?) in front of the window and have a small 20cm drop to the windowsill (ideal for growing herbs). If you don't want units in front you could build a window seat (approx. 50 cm high) with storage underneath. A good estate agent should be able to tell you if your proposals would devalue the property. If I was buying it I would see a larger kitchen/diner and downstairs toilet a plus. Your current layout doesn't give you any dedicated storage but your proposals would. There would be space to store coats in the downstairs WC and, if you place the door in the middle of the room, you could have floor-ceiling 60cm deep storage in the rear hall (shown in red). Garden storage might make more sense but if your bike is very expensive then I can see why you might wish to keep it indoors.

Will you have a sofa in the area where the ironing board now is? If so, I'd have a rug there and one behind the island, depending on whether you or not you wear shoes or slippers inside. I always wear socks indoors (no shoes or slippers) and have a tiled floor without underfloor heating in the kitchen. So I like standing on a rug whilst cooking. Softer and warmer. But you may find you don't need that, in which case I'd keep the floor bare between fridge and island and perhaps use a rug under the dining table.

So I just went outside to actually measure the full width of the house, the estate agent plans from when we bought said it's 5m wide so I was quite surprised to find its actually 5.65m and we can extend a further 50cm out so a total external width of 6.15m. Even subtracting the wall thicknesses there's more room to play with than I had originally realised! Have been fiddling with the plan. If I were to lose the raised oven and possibly the pantry the design does look more open and means I could have some open shelving too. Its just whether that ends up being form over function in terms of how I use a kitchen. Hmm decisions decisions! Thanks again for all the help though - much appreciated!

Thanks for suggestions, our budget is only £15k , can't really put cloakroom under the stairs as they are open, added photo of rear of the property and corridor showing stairs to basement. Very grateful of suggestions

I think you need to look at the whole house not just the ground floor. I can see why the bathroom on the GF exists because you have 4 beds and only 1 bathroom upstairs so someone installed the bathroom directly below using the same pipework etc., Do you really need that tiny bedroom upstairs at the front of the house? it would make a great en-suite to your master bedroom and balance your home better. You should speak to an estate agent to understand if this will impact the value of your home - personally I doubt it would as the room is very small. In the basement area with utility area, I would add a loo - great for kids in the garden or workmen. Then you could take down the wall between the dining room and kitchen. This is just my view but I am sure others will have better ideas. On your budget of £15k and if you are able to do some DIY you might be able to do it but I think it will be tight. If the budget were higher I would probably move the entire kitchen diner into the basement and take advantage of accessing the garden from that point too.
