Tiny cloakroom... what tiles?

I am having a very small cloakroom refitted. Presently it has 1" sq tiles on a sheet (as I was doing myself at the time it was the easiest option) My question, would large tiles make a space of approx 4' x 6' look smaller or make the space look larger?

Hi,

This is a really good question, we had looked into this for a customer who we were producing some bespoke tiles for for an under-stairs toilet. We came to the conclusion that a mosaic tile of 5 cm with a light design on it would open up the small space more than a larger tile would.

Personally I'd always go for bigger tiles in a small space. We're having a major renovation at the moment incl bathroom and 1 word of warning I would have is don't buy porcelain tiles. Very common apparently but a devil to drill through.

Thanks everyone for all the suggestions, I really appreciate it. I'm liking the idea of a mirror behind the toilet, I'm seeing a bit of a mirrored wall effect coming here. I'm also considering rehanging the door (thanks for the suggestion) so it opens into the utility. That would make a big difference. I like the idea of a cabinet under the sink (great way to hide pipes) but I've been worried it would make the space too cramped. Plus with the door opening into the room the sink and cabinet would take a lot of the space a person would use stepping in and shutting the door. Good news is it's actually a wooden doorframe there rather than the horrible metal frames we have in the rest of the house. I'm currently thinking of half tiling with either paint or paper (great idea thanks) on the top of the walls. Just not sure of colours. Flooring I'm thinking of something dark with warm undertones as that's what I'm going within the kitchen (North facing room plus cream cabinets I thought warm tones would be nicer). After that I have no idea. I've not yet found any cabinets so the world is my oyster. Lol way too much choice here.

I never, or should I say my husband, hasn't, got round to finish tiling behind the wash basin so we used a 'washable wallpaper' and it drives me mad everyday. It never ceases to surprise me how much toothpaste, soap etc gets splashed against the wall and no matter how much I wipe it, it always leaves little marks which are impossible to get off without damaging the surface. If I could, I would tile every last inch of the bathroom. A quick spray and wipe and it always looks clean. I feel like I'm doing an indepth scrub constantly and it still never looks quite as pristine as I would like

shari39 yes you're right. I've done this a couple of times now. Just attach it with a bead of clear silicon around the edge of the glass, ie. hold the glass in place, and then apply the bead around the edge.

Hello, Isidora is correct here putting forward a porcelain product. They are far more robust than natural products and choosing a large format material will certainly make the space look bigger. We are seeing a big push for Concrete Effect material at the moment as well which will give your space a clean and contemporary feel.
