Karin, thanks for your suggestion . The bricks surrounding the fireplace and forming the canopy are over 200 years old and each one is handmade. Although you can't see from the picture, each one is unique with different shading, sizing and surface markings. This style is very traditional in the part of France where we live. Where we can, we are trying to restore and retain the original features of the house. If we painted the bricks we would destroy something that took a craftsman almost a month to restore . The bricks had been cemented over at some point in the last 50 years and we rediscovered them when we restored the fireplace . Many of the original bricks couldnt be saved so we toured salvage yards to find authentic replacements. The entire house is over 250 years old so each room and every feature in each room has a different story to tell. The roofing timbers for example came from the hull of a ship and date from about 1700. When the ship was no longer in use the timbers were salvaged for the roof. How they got them here is a mystery. We are 150 km from the sea. That's a long journey by horse and cart.

How many doors will be off the hall as it may be a little too much oak but will you use a runner/rug? I'm sure the laminate will look just as good! What sort of slate effect were you looking at? Some of the light or honey toned ones would look good but I think the darker grey could look a little cold. I haven't found natural stone an issue in the past, just make sure whatever cleaning fluid you use doesn't have acid in. Or have a look at limestone effect? I only suggest limestone as the honey should work with the wood and the grey will work will the carpet but you can also get similar slate effect. Hi Paul, We are a dealer for Pronorm Kitchens also and we also supply another luxury brand (of course German). As Intiva Kitchens as said as long as you have a German kitchen you should not worry about the quality, as German manufacturers are world renowned as the best at making kitchen furniture. As long as you are confident in your supplier and they have a good track record ( which I would doubt is nothing but fantastic) than you should be good to go. It sounds like you have a lovely combination for your kitchen we would love to see some pictures after its all done! Really depends on how long you are planning to live with this kitchen for as to how much effort you put in. How good are the cabinet, could you replace the doors within your budget rather than paint them? If you do paint them Elephant Breath F&B paint or Dulux Egyptian Cotton or Fired Earth Oak Apple type colour for the cupboards so the copper tones in the flooring are not fighting with the wood tones? Not sure its possible but see if you can find a tiler to cut out the twee tiles and replace with someone else less twee that fits. I'd def replace the worktops with something more neutral. You've got a lot going on in the colour/texture of the floor and the design of the cabinets so I think you need to calm it down a bit.
