Help! need advice on interior design for open plan living space!

Hi all, we have just built a rear extension and knocked down our existing living room wall to create a fairly large l-shaped area which will have the kitchen, dining area and living room all open plan. The kitchen we have ordered is white gloss handleless with a 2m x 1.2m island in the centre and the floor is going to be medium oak wood (to match in with the floor in our existing house). I need to choose a worktop and paints/tiles for the splashbacks, feature wall in the lounge and dining area and all the other walls in the room.

My thoughts/questions so far are:

Worktop: Quartz white worktop - do I go for a plain white, something with speckles or plain white on the side counter and contrast colour in the island? If I do go for a contrast (which I like the idea of) what colour should i go for?

Wall colour: What wall colours work best with a white gloss kitchen?

Feature walls: We have two feature walls, one on the dining area and one on the lounge area. I would like to keep these the same so that everything ties in together. I have found some nice white/cream/grey textured brick effect tiles, but I'm not sure how to tie this in with the rest of the design.

Any ideas would be very much appreciated!

We are a bespoke made to measure KBB studio but it's our product that's premium not the price. We normally save customers loads compared to the high street stores.

Hello Jeannette, what a lovely project! I've worked on a number of bungalows and they have their own unique challenges. Making the spaces work for our needs today, and for your own family needs have to be the priorities. I would suggest you appoint an interior designer before thinking in detail about the kitchen. An interior designer will find out how you want to use the space and come up with clever floor plan that is workable and beautiful. This is going to be a really important investment for you. Thank you for your response. We had plans pretty finalised until we found out that we can keep just that long wall into the large space as it is a load-bearing. There is an opportunity to put a door in though. I am attaching what it looked like with all the walls that we can now remove. We have also been tinkering with ideas which I am adding as well. I added some comments on the plans as well. What we want to have is a dining area with a large table that seats 8-10 people. We want enough space for two people to work and cook in the kitchen. Thus, we were thinking of an island or an L-shape workspace coming out. We'd like to have a utility room to have space for all the cleaning utensils. Washer and Dryer will be upstairs in a separate laundry room. The living room is nothing formal but an area to relax and watch TV. We'd like to have an L-shaped cough in there for a family of four (2 kids under the age of 10).

Instead of looking at it like a tv problem I would look it like A wall problem. Ask yourself What do want to feel when I look at that space? Do i want to feel calm? Thought provoked? Homely and catch up with the outside world(hence TV) Personally I would make it a feature wall and hang some thought provoking art. Something that gets your quests talking every time they are in the kitchen.

Perhaps look for a nice wallpaper together, to go on the "dining wall" and a rug that goes with in. And then decide on other colors. Is the flooring in good condition?

Hi Sofaiza,

It sounds like you have done great so far and have a great space. Well done.

I have just completed a kitchen design with what sounds like exactly the same kitchen units. We went for a speckled white worktop which worked really well. We then chose a light grey with a hint of blue for the walls - this is modern and fresh and works well with the white gloss and with the silvers or whites that may appear elsewhere in the kitchen.

What flooring have you gone for?

For a contrast Black worktop went well and was considered for the same project I mentioned.

For the features walls the tiles sound intriguing but I would need to see them to get a better idea or know if they would work with the design. Sounds good though.

White gloss cabinets and medium oak flooring sounds perfect. In a kitchen you only want one element that is loud and bossy so if you opt for Quartz with speckles everything else has to be quiet and supportive. If you use white check on the maintenance and how to deal with stains - I heard that Gwyneth Paltrow covered her white countertops in tomato juice to get all the staining out of the way in one hit! A black countertop would look great with contrast and balance created with the white cabinets. Keep us posted on your progress. Kind regards, Liz
