Need help with the dining area in my kitchen
Comments (44)What a beautiful and perfect table you found! Hubba hubba - those legs are just gorgeous. Well done and thanks for calling out to me. As for the chair mix, I think four beige and two merlot would be lovely. I think you like a traditional look, so I'm a bit worried that you won't be happy with it. If the table will normally be smaller with four beige chairs around it and maybe put the two merlot ones on either side of the radiator cover/"console", then definitely do the mix. Mismatched chairs around a dining table are often all different or the same make and model in a multitude of colours or the same colour in different styles. Do a Houzz search and see if you can find your planned mix and if you like the look. If in doubt, get four beige and look at them for a while! You could tie the two chair colours together with little cushions on the chairs - maybe just on the two merlot ones. Both of these are too big, I think, but the colours are good. http://www.notonthehighstreet.com/reasonhome/product/pondicherry-flower-silk-cushion-cover http://www.notonthehighstreet.com/emmalonsdale/product/chit-chat-rectangular-cushion This one might be the right size: http://www.notonthehighstreet.com/jennysibthorp/product/lobster-pot-screen-printed-natural-linen-cushion I covet the table already so I can't wait to see him all polished up.......See MoreNew build - combined kitchen, living and dining area - how to......
Comments (4)Sounds like you have an architect involved - these are all questions that any architect worth their salt can answer for you. ;) South facing glazing is more likely to cause you problems with overheating rather than heat loss, especially during the summer. If you have a lot of south facing glazing then you may need to counterbalance this with some shading. Incorporating a thermal heat sink may also help. It's possible to have clean minimal lines and still create a warm homely feel - look at timber finishes, paint colours, etc as well as soft furnishings. Wood burning stoves are excellent - modern ones can be highly efficient ways to heat your space and look great as focal points in a room. Speak to your architect about these concerns/queries and if they're not able to answer or you're not convinced by their answer check that they are really architects - must be registered with the architects registration board - as all of these are simple questions that a good architect will be able to respond to for you. Good luck with your new home!...See MorePlacement of dining & family area
Comments (37)Hi LTS, The sketch plan your architect has come up with is not what I would expect from a 'qualified' architect. If you didn't request a study why is it included? The dining table is orientated such that three of the eight seats do not allow a view of the garden but face the kitchen. The door to the utility room is in the wrong location which should be adjacent the kitchen and I'm not sure you need anything like the length of the utility room as shown. There could have been a little more thought given to structural matters at this stage - eg: the beam above kitchen will be large, expensive and cumbersome to install correctly. On the plus side the overall planning principles are OK - but the whole plan needs to be prepared to a larger scale (1:50) and to indicate clearly where each piece of furniture is to be placed and how the kitchen functions (worktop/cooker/worktop/sink sequence) before you make any commitments to the architect's proposal. Get into the whole detail of the plan now and avoid the headaches of having to alter designs as the work proceeds. There should be no charge from the architect for requesting this second stage work by the way. You should also insist on receiving an elevation and a section drawing at this stage together with a clear indication of how the extension will look when viewed from the garden and, most importantly what the architect thinks the whole of the work will cost and how long will it take. (If you have already received this information my apologies)...See MoreAdvice for Open Plan Zoning for Living/Kitchen/Dining Area!!
Comments (32)I'm doing all I can to stop it from crashing but no luck yet! I've lengthened the island from 3.2M to 3.6M to increase the storage for the kitchen but agree the island should be moved down slightly. I'd like a really large seating area but will have a play around to see how I can make this area work better as the settee is a little bit close to the island! I've always wanted a formal seating area and will have the space to do this but may be able to get away with 2 settees rather than the 3 I had my heart set on!! I'd put the TV on that wall so I could see it when I was in the kitchen cooking! But it would be better placed on the other wall for people sat at the Island to see. Your points are so helpful! This is the most productive day I've had in a while!! And I've just watched the George Clarke show 'Ugly House to Lovely House' to see the Crittall windows and I love them!...See MoreMBH Carpentry and Joinery Ltd.
