Can you compare a bespoke kitchen to one that's off the shelf?

I've been debating about posting this for quite some time now, but feel that it is an important topic to share as it's one of those crucial questions we all ponder at some point:

"Why should I spend money on something that I can find for a lot cheaper elsewhere - a kitchen for example?"

I was recently asked this very question by a potential client who put our kitchen quote in front of me together with an “off the shelf” manufactured kitchen quote, side by side, to compare. Unsurprisingly the manufactured kitchen came out cheaper, however I noticed they had not included worktops or installation (it’s always worth checking this in any quote you get from one of the mass kitchen manufacturers). I must admit it’s always interesting when your work is compared to another’s, but even more so when it’s a company with standards that are a lot different to that of a handmade bespoke business. It’s a bit like comparing a Primark fashion item with an outfit you have commissioned from a bespoke dressmaker – both garments fulfil the same purpose in giving you something to wear, but one is likely to be better quality, a better fit and, most importantly, give you an individual look and style that you won’t see replicated at every event you attend. Everyone knows that you can buy a kitchen online or in store for a fairly cheap price. 'Cheap' being used loosely as it is still your hard earned cash and we're still talking over £3000 here. There is nothing wrong with buying this type of kitchen if it suits your lifestyle, your personal taste or your bank balance. However it is un-fair to directly compare handmade work to that of a mass manufactured piece. Also handmade and bespoke needn’t mean paying 'extortionate' prices. If you shop around for the right “maker”, checking their credentials, looking out for testimonials from satisfied customers and perhaps arranging to visit someone who has already experienced that business’s service, in much the same way as you would if you wanted that special dress or outfit, then you will be surprised at how reasonable the price can be for something that is truly tailored to you, unique and handmade – a quality purchase. Helenandy126: Travis Perkins came in at the best, but I have a trade account with them and I bargain hard. If I remember, Furness sold direct but they just couldn't get anywhere near what I wanted to pay. There are thousands of bricks out there, you just need to narrow it down but go with the big names such as Hanson or Ibstock as they'll have close copies of most bricks out there. I'm not sure if the merchants still do this but once you give your site address and your brick, they register it with the manufacturers and then no other merchant can quote, meaning your stuck with their price. That's why you'll then be able to find a close match with another manufacturer so that you can then get another price for the different brick.

I too always had the thoughts that hand made pieces were much more expensive...but not always the case... And its immensely satisfying when you get the style, size and colours of what you would need... My brother in law has made me just a few piece... Very simple, for storage.. But THEY FIT. just where they need too.. I love wood.. My Dad was a French cabinet maker in the early 50's and as child I would sit at the table and watch in amazing ways he worked with wood... Small pieces he would make us simple little toys, or no's... Nothing painted. We were very lucky in our home to have cupboards in the kitchen, on the wall fitted and it was covered in Formica... We also had a beautiful solid wood fireplace... Shelves for Mums little ornaments (which would never touch, look with your eyes only). I too like to work with wood, when having the chance...memories that will stay with me forever.. (Sorry for the reminiscing.).. But yes so wish I could afford to build my own home and incorporate all the things...Made By hand... Thanks for a very interesting article....

Houzz competition I know the deadline has passed but I would like for you to see this. (The photos are not uploading properly) As embarrassing as it has been for myself and my mum; over the course of my life, I have lived in such a beautiful neighbourhood in the Blackfriars area for over 22 years and the only renovation or decoration that was done was in our kitchen by the council which was lovely. We also got a really nice gentleman to fix our blinds in the kitchen for us however only one side was done because he mentioned that the measurement was not accurate for the other window area so for months one side has been an open view which at times I don't mind, but everyone loves privacy from time to time. When it comes to the rest of the house - 1. The corridor - the walls are damaged by paint and mould so the walls feel quite rough with cracks which at times Ive hurt myself with small scratches... the corridor is sky blue but I also imagined my corridor in a yellow/magnolia colour with white borders and my mum even bought the paint but till now it was not done. 2. The doors in the corridor that lead to each room are off white and the doors don't shut properly anymore. 3. The toilet is separate to the bathroom it's really old and green colour is very boring, the toilet itself is faulty, the wall between the toilet and bathroom by the window is quite thin so it has ripped a little bit. The pipes are cracked and the mould is showing and I was thinking to get the council to wrap it up in some kind of polystyrene wrap. 4. The bathroom has ABESTOS around the window area as the ventilation is so bad and because the window is high up it is quite hard to reach to always open and close it. The bathroom was repainted white at one point but the colour didn't stay for long. Now it's mouldy and black. The pipes are bad and mouldy and the sink area is cracked around. I had an idea of painting it with the theme white and gold accessories or blue white and gold (which my mum purchased blue paint) but we never got around to doing anything. The bath itself sounds like it's about to fall through and many times there have been leaks downstairs into my neighbours flat. The council just used a cardboard/wooden barriers to cover the bath. 5. The front room had wallpaper before and was painted over. Now, on one side of the room a little bit of the wall paper is coming off very randomly as if it's shrinking (I don't remember taking off anything). The carpet was taken off completely but nothing was done to it. This area has become store space too (due to clutter and books). We have some nice brown/gold curtains which I visualised my living room to have a boutique type elegant brown/gold/cream theme. 6. Bedroom no. 1 has not been dealt with for years and so it has become a clutter room for clothes as well as the corridor. The room colour is sky blue but would love for this room to be an elegant green theme something classy for a mother. 7. Bedroom no. 2 is a baby pink room with the intention of painting the room white with splashes of colour. I started taking some things out and taking out my bed area but it's not complete as you can see by the photos. Overall this interior design is definitely needed because of how long it has taken for the decor process to be done. This is the conundrum that is needed to be solved.

I agree with Jonathan albeit that his comments should apply also to Italian kitchens. The majority of kitchens from these two countries, even low priced ones, are manufactured to incredibly precise standards. Installed properly, you should expect vertical gaps of no more that 3mm between doors. And this will be precise throughout! Place 6 x 600mm cabinets side by side and they will measure 3600mm - not a millimetre more! Most, if not all German & Italian kitchens also use top quality very high density chipboard for carcases, not the lowest price board available which one can quite easily break with two hands, and which will bow and expand at the slightest sign of moisture. I am not saying that ALL British manufacturers use cheap material but those at the bottom of the market certainly do, in order to keep their prices low. So take care to select good quality carcases! And the difference between German and Italian manufacturers? I doubt there is much difference at all in respect of quality (except German carcases are generally 16mm whilst the Italians use 18mm - but same quality board) but I believe there is a huge difference in flexibility. One of the manufacturers we use provides carcases in melamine faced chipboard as well as veneered chipboard, plywood, MDF, stainless steel or a special 100% water resistant material made of recycled paper! Cabinets are available in any size with doors in laminate, lacquer, veneer, glass, brass, stainless steel & many other metals, Corian, stone, quartz and numerous other materials. Of course, all of this is available in the UK, but you'll need to go the bespoke route and you may not be able to get everything from any one company. Yes, delivery from Germany or Italy may take a little longer bit good things are worth waiting for - aren't they?
