Project to replace our staircase
Comments (10)I had 2 quotes from specialist company's the first to do the complete refurbishment of the stairs £16500 the second to design and make the steel work only £5500. With them sorts of quotes yes I would agree with your joiner friend, however I decided to install and do the maximum work I could and only use specialist when required. I contacted the architect that had already designed an extension I done on the house. Sent him the rough drawings of what I wanted he did all the calculations of the structure and building regs. Then I contacted a local fabrication company to make the steel work, once completed I removed the old staircase, and with the help of 3 others installed the steel work. Electrical work had been completed. The oak treads I bought as 12 solid oak pieces cut to size, then I completed the cut outs for the steel plates and sanding. Plastering of all walls by a plastering company. The most expensive part was the glass, and fitting by a glass company. Painting again me, handrail bought and fitted by me The project actual costs were Design drawings £450 Steel work £1200 Plastering £675 Oak treads £750 Lighting £260 Glass £2350 Labour free Bottle of wine for local framer who off loaded the 350kg steel work from truck Does it add value to my house not sure but we love it!...See MoreMake our staircase different!
Comments (9)Hello ghesp, For seamless continuity paint the ends of the stairs white as per the rest of your woodwork.. Normally I'd say eggshell but you have gone with gloss.. So you could do the stair ends and then have a runner like your carpet pic at the bottom of your set of images.. I would keep the banisters white as this lends well to the scheme you have already.. Or if you want to introduce a bit of warmth strip the banister and don't paint the stair ends.. Here's two pics to show what I mean : ))...See MoreHelp please in creating definition and interest in our stairs and lan
Comments (10)Minnie, thanks so much- I think that's a great idea re wallpapering the stairwall. Am going to look into pricing that. Also love the console table with books on bottom. My husband loves the ceiling to floor window in landing, so, although I loved your idea re upholstered bench, he unfortunately is adamant he doesn't want anything there! Misha, thank you so much for all your lovely ideas .. That idea re the tree mural is very interesting- could you recommend anywhere I could get a nice one like the one in your picture? It's also a more budget friendly option, if it comes to it.... Re colour schemes, I was thinking of a dash of anything warm, i.e. Reds/ greens/ warm neutrals, and I would tend to veer away from blues and yellows personally... I need also to figure out which would be best in terms of our picture display, as, unlike your photo, they are all of different sizes and frames!!...See MoreOur 80/20 stair carpet only lasted 5 years. Runner next time?
Comments (0)We are in the process of decorating our hall, stairs and landing. We are wondering what to do as our 80/20 carpet has only lasted 5 years before starting to wear on the treads. Our previous one lasted about a bit longer - about 8 years and that was a cheaper boucle style. We are wondering if we would be better with a runner - maybe it will be harder wearing?...See MoreSteve Attwell Ironwork
