Long narrow en-suite, what tiles, furniture etc

Would love some ideas about the design of our new ensuite to loft bedroom. It is a compact 3m x 1m approx. Wondering what size, shape and colour of tile would make it feel more spacious, and any other tips for small shower rooms. I quite like the plank tiles for the floor but wondering if they will look silly in a room this small. Also where to go to get compactish toilet, sink etc.

Generally a larger tile will make a room look bigger than a smaller one as they are less 'busy' also go for lighter colours across all surfaces (ceiling, floor and wall) if you can to increase the light in the room. If a Building Inspector is involved you may need to keep a certain colour difference between surfaces, but in the past we have negotiated a band at skirting level and at the edge of the ceiling to satisfy the regulations which could be an option if needed.

The old idea of using mirrors to open up a space really does work. I don't know if you will have a window - if so I assume from the description that it would be either a velux type roof window or a vertical dormer window - either way if you have one try and put a mirror opposite if possible so the room is opened up even further and the light bouncing around the space is amplified.

I know Ideal Standard do 'Concept Space' fittings that are more compact than their traditional counterparts which might be worth a gander. You can also get WCs with a sink over the cistern, an though these have never personally appealed, sometimes a small space breeds necessity.

We agree with the above comment, large tiles help to make a small room look bigger and using mirrors really enhances a sense of space.

Hey everyone! Good to hear from you all again. We have 2 wks before we go back to school. It's been a busy summer but good. My boy (14) is in marching band and they've been practicing all summer for the fall football games. He is worn out. Hi All - taking on board your comments I have come up with three variations. Of course would love your comments! The distance from vanity to WC in plan 1 is approx 60cm - it could be made a bit more. This falls within the guideline you posted (23inches). More space could be created by making the shower a bit narrower (shown on all 3 plans as 1m wide (39 inches). I don't think there is quite enough space to divide the room and the problem with the idea of the bath right in the middle is that on a practical basis we would have to walk around it on a daily basis to get to the shower! Could quickly get very annoying!

Personally I would put large tiles on the floor as well as in the shower, as herringbone will mean a lot of grout lines on the floor to get grubby. Then you could use the herringbone tiles on the wall behind the sink and make a feature of that wall? And/or on the wall above the bath (though it would be a hell of a job for the tilers with that slope, but can be done)? The bath panel could be either the large tiles or the herringbone. What’s the plan for the black long tiles - I like the idea of using those somewhere, maybe on the false wall behind the loo? Black herringbone as a nod to the white herringbone but to give a contrasting colour. Are the marble tiles real marble, or porcelain marble style? They are lovely by the way. If they are real marble I would be a little wary of using them in the shower as they are porous and may stain or spall, also mineral deposits can leach out causing rust stains especially with all those lovely veins. Calacatta is a particularly porous marble, more so than Carrara for example. If they are real then I would limit them to wall use (the sink wall and possibly the wall behind the bath as I say above) and perhaps use the black herringbone in the shower instead?
