Any advice please re my garden and two spoilt cats

I have a small garden at the moment its half paved with borders around the edges on two side of the it which is filled with earth and did have plants. Unfortunately one of my cats likes to 'toilet' in the border area. All the plants are now dead and it looks awful. I need something that looks neat and tidy but can cater for my cat which I can keep clean. I was wondering whether to pave it all and have two large troughs made to fill with earth so he can go in this ? I have a small green area in the middle this is astro turf and he wont go on that .Could really do with some help. I'm trying to sell my property but the cat just wont use the litter tray and wont leave the garden as too timid

Hello Jules,

Yes the cats will want to go in a suitable but not too close area.. a border is really ideal if they're clean and hide their business and if you're worried you can always dig it over.... Mine also go under the hedge where there's soil... Could you perhaps put a row of something like Buxus in front so to speak so that puss can still go but you see something leafy and green in front!

They tend to want to go in the same place and so if you can add something that is perhaps aesthetically pleasing whilst retaining his area, it's probably safer if he won't go elsewhere.. I also think far better than a litter tray and will probably deter other cats from toileting there. : ))

This is where we need to know more about your hedge which I can't tell from the photo. If it's Leylandii you cannot cut it behind the last green shoot because it will not re-shoot and you'll be looking at a brown curtain forever. If it's brown because it's diseased then that is another problem altogether! My suggestion is you join the Royal Horticultural Society and then send them a sample of the dead clipping for them to pronounce upon! I can't tell you about diseases for sure and not at a distance. You'll also get plenty of plant advice from them generally. www.rhs.org.ik you'll be in safe hands there (it's only about £40 per year and has other benefits too. Good luck.

Hi there, it will be hard to achieve an open floor plan with this side extension . In fact, it seems it would just complicate things in a very expensive way. If you don't need a 4th bedroom every day, but just occasionally for in-laws, can you make the garage into a small, compact guesthouse? If your kitchen feels too small, you might just want to relocate it to the room with the fireplace. Removing ivy - any advice please

Wow, that is a thick trunk of ivy. Well done for keeping it under control. No expert but I did some googling and I would try cutting at about a foot above the base and drill a few holes into the stump and fill these holes with tree stump killer or whichever herbicide you wish to use, cover with a plastic bag or foil then wrap an elastic band around it to keep the rain off. Check every few days and top up chemicals as necessary. The theory of this is that the chemicals will absorb into the vascular system of tree (or in this case ivy) and also kill the roots. The top half when cut will eventually turn brown and dry up which should make it easier to remove. If you decide to use a vinegar method then it needs to be 20% acid strength rather than the 5-6% you get in supermarkets. Not sure how long this would take to work or even if it does work but I imagine 2-3 weeks before you see any results. When you dig foundations for new extension try and remove as many roots as possible but smothering them should have little effect on your build. Hope this helps a little.

I just measured my room with yours. Mine is 7.86 wide X 4.60 to the bathroom wall (where your extension is) We do have our lounge area extra but that extension is mainly the kitchen and dining area - plus casual seating in summer. Don’t despair. I would really recommend having a go with that software I mentioned and you can have up to 3 layouts for free (I’ve never paid!) and it’s pretty easy to work out. (I don’t sell it by the way 😂 I just love it!) With my room only being slightly wider than yours - If you only plan on using it for kitchen and dining then I would definitely make the utility larger and worry about the dog leg after. If you are having an island, then you will have units in that so do you really need units all the way around the walls? That seems a lot of units. Could you not make the dog leg pantry as I mentioned as you are talking 600 dog leg then units on top of that - that’s a huge space. You wouldn’t need units then around both corners. Just flinging some ideas about! Have you got rough kitchen plans or design? Where is your living space to be? It’s a great space and I think you need to step back and start at the basics with it with what you really want from the room and how you could fit them into that space. These are rough pics of my room which changes all the time as I move my dining table about ie by the window, also my tub chairs move around depending on the season! It’s a flexible space.

My aunt has rises in her garden......I thought it was strange that they were flowering at Christmas until I found out she had faked it with fabric plants.
It might give some instant colour for selling
