Colours for new front door and Windows?

We have just recently bought this house in an old English village. The house has been built on many times over the years but part of it is 260 years old. I'm at a loss as to an appropriate front door style and colour and a colour for the window frames. I think white would be too stark..? TIA for suggestions x

Aoife what about an off white but not too yellowy cream sash windows. Alternatively a colour between dark green/grey sash might be nice

Aoife, you are right to consider changing the colour of the outside paintwork. The black is very stark and gloomy. I think you could go for a bright red front door and the windows in a light grey. This would brighten and lift the whole house. When you choose the red for the door, bear in mind the colour of the brickwork and try to tone in with it. Good luck - hope it turns out well whatever you choose.

Thank you Colorhappy, I was secretly hoping you would comment as you clearly know all about colour, something I definitely struggle with a little. I think your suggestion of a stone colour for the render and a green blue for the doors would look lovely, and I love the idea of it relating to the greenery in the garden. Do you have any suggestions for a stone colour? I have looked at F&B for the green/blue, they have a paint actually named green/blue, but I am not sure if this is too much of a literal interpretation of your advice :-) I also like the oval room blue too, do you think this could work? I love Stiffkey blue, but not sure if this is too rich/deep a colour and would end up looking dark? The front of the house faces north but still gets lots of great light, the house is elevated somewhat so it is never in shadow if that makes any difference to our choice of colour?

I would but you could do the door a bolder colour if you wish. I found this picture with the palest of grey for the balcony and a darker grey for the door. I also love yellow or berry doors but it’s quite a statement! So much choice.

It needs timber windows in keeping with the age of the house. Hardwood preferred so you can apply a coat of finish (not paint). In future it is easier to maintain too. A light sanding down and a cost of seal every other year to keep it looking good.

Timber windows would definitely help. Those small windows would look great. But use factory-finished engineered softwood - the frames will last 60 years and they won't need recoating for 8-10 years. Baby blue would be good. Or more of a F&B griege.

Have a look at some cream pvcu sliding sash windows with a door frame to sut and a nice farrow and ball engineered timber door - see images below

I like the black Windows but I think the small windows aren't in keeping. If the wall is tidied, railings painted black and there are some lush green plants around the house will look great!

Hi Aoife

Although we're biased we would definitely opt for wood windows and doors on such an old property, it would be a shame to ruin the look & feel of the house as it's beautiful.

Wooden doors have the same level of security as UPVC doors with multi-point locking systems. We do double glazed traditional lead weighted sash windows too which are highly energy efficient.

If you opt for an oak finish it would look smart but could be expensive. If you are looking at just repainting the existing windows and replacing the door then why not try a grey?
