What to put under tv?

User
Hi. Our TV is wall mounted. The DVD player etc is all hidden away in another cupboard away from the TV as we didn't want it all in show (my hubby does this for a job) but I'm left struggling as to what I put under the t.v or if I need to put anything there at all? I'm not sure if it looks odd without a media unit, but it's not needed. So any ideas? I did think a console table with stools underneath but again I'm not sure! Thanks in advance...oh and excuse the lack of flooring and skirting boards :)

Amber, I have a side board like this ..Which was originally under the tv ( but looked to big ) at the other side of the room. Do you think another silver cabinet under the tv would look OK or too much for one room?

    Hello 81bec,

Very glad you like the Credenza, There isn't really a rule in that as long as it is a good fit spatially, and it looks aesthetically beautiful within the scheme, then that's all there is to it.. I don't believe in following rules.. I think you have to set them..

So what you think works for you is what you should do.. What I like about the choice is that it fits the space and less is sometimes far more... My "curated spaces" are all about perfect balance which is not all about filling the entire room.. Things need to breathe and so with a guide image, it's an idea but for any pieces some measuring up to be sure. Dimensionally the piece is roughly 32" H x 60" W x 18" : ))

Option one for me as well, I see no problem seeing the back of the sofa from the kitchen and YES to your idea of adding a narrow console table behind that you can dress with lamps which will help at night. Two small tables at either end to pop drinks down would help you eliminate the need for a coffee table and when you have guests they could service people occupying the chairs. It's a lovely space :)

Thanks so much everyone, it's been great to read the ideas. Eletyadams - what a fantastic unit - this is the sort of style I love and think would fit in with the decor and style of the property. I wonder whether it would work in a soft white to match the dado and not clash with the oak flooring? Firtreecottage - I agree something not fixed would be better. The stove was already here when we moved in so we're very lucky! It kicks out some heat too! I believe it was from our local stove place midland-stoves.co.uk

I had these sofa custom built almost 3 1/2 years and we just moved from a 2 bedroom rental apartment to this house. I knew it was smaller living room and I didn't think the configuration would affect the setup. I was thinking of mounting the TV on a swivel corner above the snowman painting. Unless if there is a bracket that folds upward and downward to mount on the ceiling.

Agree with Jonathan, I like a tv at eye level if possible, if you have a very wide room it’s not so bad but if you have to tilt you head back in any way to watch tv thats not a good thing in my book, nice look to the above layout in the pic I think.

    Hello 81bec,

Ah, I didn't know you had another one.. So yes, I would suggest trying it under the tv. If it was near to the sofa and I'm understanding you, I would leave that side free... See what you think with your piece under the tv. If this works then do that.. If it doesn't then perhaps your piece would go in another part of your home to create coherence and reference parts of your home with similar items that compliment.. There's no need to buy something else if something you have works..

    Hello 81bec,

I found it via polyvore but believe it was from Dwellstudio.. I'll try to find a link but you may be able to find something like it and perhaps paint it in metallic silver (Ardenbrite) if this piece is not available.. It's a nod to the mid century in it's design but new .. I'm looking for a link for it.. I'll add more if I find them but the piece is American..

    http://mitraniathome.com/index.php/contact

    : ))

I look all over the globe for unusual and lovely pieces.. UK first if possible but.. when something cannot be found.. There are ways to create what you need if you can't find the piece in question..

Normally I would say with an original to keep as is.. but... When there's a need for a specific finish. I often "Pimp" my furniture.. so.. Something for example like this...

    http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Teak-Record-Cabinet-60s-Mid-Century-Lovely-Vintage-Storage-Cabinet-/302012469610?hash=item465158916a:g:EP0AAOSwyKxXhUCT

With this..... Really really soft soft bristle brush or spray gun.. would probably need some preparation but it is another way.

    http://www.ardenbrite.com/

Or if budget allowed someone to silver leaf the credenza in the same style....

There is something similar if creating the look isn't a favoured option..

Thanks Amber... I did try my silver sideboard under the TV but it was way too big so it's at the dining end of the same room....would it be ok if I did add something silver in colour under the tv.....or would it look too much having two silver pieces? As its a lounge/diner :)

    Hello 81bec,

Okay well at least you know, so keep the other piece at the dining end where it works.. I don't think it would be too much to have an additional silvered piece as it's a theme within the room and they are not side by side.. I have two charcoal pieces either side of a chimney breast and they work as they're not the same height.. What will work is that they compliment the room and that they're not symmetrical. As your pieces will.. So yes I think you could add another piece for sure.. Look forward to seeing what you choose.

By the way, where are you based? I contacted a company about silver leafing (Gilding).. Awaiting a call, so I can give you an idea of costs, should you want to have something bespoke made so to speak..

Following on from Maggs suggestion, maybe an ottoman which looks contemporary but can also be used as additional seating? Also you can get it upholstered in your choice of fabric. Found this on eBay so you can see what it would look like. You would need to check sizes to see how it would work in your space and with the size of the tv. Good luck!

    Hello 81bec,

Okay, well I have actually contacted a gilding specialist who can make the cabinet and give you the look.. There's no obligation at all! So don't feel it's a pressure its just because I feel the piece I suggested is not going to be easy to find.. Given you like it, I want to find a way for you to have something as similar as possible.. I will let you know here what comes back hopefully today.. They can work to your budget and as I have called will offer a trade price! At least then you have an idea should you want to consider it as an option..

    Hello 81bec,

Have now had some prices through.. To make the cabinet from Ash exactly as it is in my picture with two gilded doors.. It's going to be over £2k for white gold as they would use to create this finish. The company in question are the Collectors Workshop based in London. If I have any further quotes I will put them here..

To do the doors on a similar sized piece would be £650 for the doors alone. So they are not extreme in pricing when you consider the materials (white gold) as some credenza's can be in the thousands.. but if this isn't in the budget then some of my earlier suggestions might yield close results in terms of aesthetics..

    Most welcome 81bec,

I did look for something cheaper as it would be out of mine too.. but have not seen anything I think is right or good enough that's already silvered.. Have you looked at my earlier suggestion though.. Ebay purchase and the Ardenbrite.. They are the most fantastic of metallic paints.. This could give you something similar all be it plain silvered which could be equally lovely for a fraction.. Ash or another blonde wood would be ideal a complimentary wood to get the look. : ))

    Hello 81bec,

I found this that you can paint the door and middle section with the Ardenbrite in silver.. It's the best metallic paint on the market and would give you the closest match all be it without the square design. They did in fact bring out a successor to my initial suggested piece which was nowhere near as nice as the first one looks.. So I can't find anything within a more modest budget that is already silvered.. Have a look at these and see what you think..

    http://www.johnlewis.com/john-lewis-grayson-tv-stand/p1866355?navAction=jump

Or you could find something that is glass and metal to compliment the slim shelving unit.. Or something that is mirrored to pick out the little table.. I have not found anything in that aesthetic that I like that would be nice enough to suggest, but it is another route you could look at to tie in to your scheme. : ))

Hi Amber. I gave the idea of painting a piece of furniture some thought but I've decided against as we are in the process of converting the garage so we haven't really got anywhere to do it :)...... Thanks for the links, I've measured and from the floor to the bottom edge of the tv it's only 89cm...so ideally looking for something very low so I can place objects on top of the unit, hence narrowing my search even more!
Everything I seem to come across is white gloss, could this work?

    Hello 81bec,

Okay sure.. I do all my painting by hand in the living room or some pieces of art in the garden but I have wooden floors. Ah okay.. One of the pieces is only 58 in height so I thought that might be ideal.

So you have the white of the dining table.. This too could be a complimentary finish.. I am not keen on gloss anything. I rather feel it's dated.. I designed a gloss kitchen 10 years ago and so my thoughts are that it's not the way to go BUT.... If you find something you love then of course. It is very annoying about that first piece I must say.. Sometimes companies make the wrong choices, I consult for brand companies on occasion for their products.. I find a tweak here and there and they'd have a perfect piece.. but then also like the credenza, they go and ruin something good by developing it too far! I'll keep looking and let you know if I find anything else.. : ))

    Hello 81bec,

These are rather nice.. You could have a couple in a row and they compliment the piece you have.. They are 50x 50x 50 The other gr8 thing is that they're super versatile.. Side table.. Bedside table.. Console in 2's or 3's .. and they have the added element of storage.. : ))

    Hello again 81bec!

There have been some amazing suggestions and I completely understand how frustrating it is when you love a piece of furniture and its out of your price bracket :-(.
I think you might like this and feel it will fit in with the rest of your furniture - also it is 79cm high which is a bonus. You have potential to add baskets or storage boxes underneath for extra storage. Eventually when you find something that you love, like Amber has recommended, this can be relocated easily. I have used this console in many projects and it always works a treat!

Hi guys! Thank You both for your great suggestions! I know this is a bit of a contradiction but I think in all honesty My wish list is for something low and not too blingy! I've been slowly going through the room and trying to make it more 'homely' I don't want anything like glass that I have to constantly clean ( I'm a tad o.c.d )...
I plan to keep my silver sideboard but I'd like to change the black coffee table for something less bling. So any suggestions for that most welcome? I was thinking of an upholstered ottoman, not sure of colour?I really appreciate your ideas as it's definitely help me realise what I do and don't want...... :)))

And regarding the ottoman, you could have it made up in a fabric the same colour as the wallpaper. It would link the colour scheme together in my opinion. Otherwise you could go for a light grey as you have so many options.

    Hi 81bec!
Personally I would not introduce the chevron print into the equation due to the vicinity of the wallpaper, so the first ottoman would work. Please check the size to ensure you have enough space to move around the sofa area and by the fireplace.
Good luck and let us know what you end up buying :-)

    Hello 81bec,

I like the idea you have with a contrasting pattern personally as I don't like the first ottoman, it's stark and heavy and doesn't flatter the feel you have created thus far I feel.. Contrasting patterns whether geometric or other is really a vibrant way to compliment a scheme and you can be as bold or as subtle as you like with this idea..

It's seen a lot in interiors and I think would work beautifully with your wallpaper and the chair! I have just seen you add.. Here's a few fabric ideas that would be very complimentary on a ottoman or stool of your choosing... The other thing of course is that it adds texture to the room within the soft furnishings as you have done with your wallpaper.

But there seems to be such a limited choice!.. The only ones I managed to find where the ones I posted and one that was leather look...arghh! So would a pattern be preferable over plain? And if I have to go with a regular footstool should it be a buttoned top or not?

    Hello 81bec,

Have you considered the idea that you can just sit a fabulous tray on top of said ottoman.. Thus you can have the fabric you want and use it as a coffee table etc at the same time.. if it's not used as a seat.. You can then also get one with an entire lid to store things inside.. In this way you maximise it's potential to benefit how you wish to make use of your furnishings.. : ))
