U-shaped kitchen dimensions

We are planning to build a U-shaped kitchen and are wondering about the gap between the opposing counter runs.

What do people recommend? We have heard everything from 1.2m to 2.2m.

We have 120cm works very well - I was worried it would feel too narrow but no issues at all

Hi Aaron,

1.2m should provide you plenty of space... it's enough for two people to pass, without having a cavern of a space between two worktops. That said, it has to work in the context of the room... but certainly don't cut down on kitchen to have a bigger gap, if you don't have too! Our kitchens are usually designed with a similar size gap, sometimes smaller... again though, it depends on what you want and the room can work with.

I prefer the straight run with the bigger island and agree with Karen that the extractor is best on an outside wall, I also think that a 1200 deep island means that people sat on stools shouldn't worry about getting splashed. A couple of questions for me- the space behind the stools.... is the plan correct? You mentioned a large dining space but this space is only 2m so not big enough for a table but it's too wide to ignore. Is there a solid wall there? Also I think the construction of the deeper island is messy- the little cabinets at the side are going to look odd- in my opinion you should just have cabinets under the breakfast bar and support the sides with vertical worktop or with decorative side panels. I also notice the sink is over a 900 unit with a 200 unit next to it. This means that the wall cabinets don't line up but everything else is symmetrical. Whether you put the sink or the hob on this wall I would rather see a 1000 base and a filler at the end of the run..... (although your in tall units may end up having decorative vertical panels this will use up the available space.)

Hi all! I would really appreaciate any help to choose the right lighting schema for my kitchen. It's a U shaped kitchen, 3 mts. wide x about 5 long. I made this: each colour is a different light and the switches for each circuit are shown in the picture too. That looks like a great idea, actually if we kept bathroom the same (it's already been newly done) and left the external wall into the cupboardy bit the same/no need for re-enforced beams and have washer/dryer stacked in the cupboard space, all we would need is the support between kitchen and living room which would work out much cheaper than I think my initial model would be (and possibly a little more practical too, and possibly more value) Here is a bit of a prototype of the size of the space we'd have to play with, I think it would be big enough for our needs (not massive amount of worktop space which is something we'd hoped for, but really I think it's enough) and also some space to fit a small table and 4 chairs in front of french doors and means not having to rip out whole of bathroom downstairs. I think I may take some advice from temple274 too, and instead of building whole bathroom upstairs and trying to readjust windows, I'll just make a small ensuite in top right corner of bedroom 2. I've seen little porthole windows you can get, but equally like temple274 says all I'd really need is adequate ventilation. All in all I think this new plan is better and more cost saving than the original!! I knew coming here would be a good idea! Thanks all x

We have a near identical space (once we've knocked down a wall!) and having a similar debate, so I'm watching with interest. Key difference for us is we don't have a separate living room so this room will be everything for us. Our current thoughts are dining area immediately below the island with the t.v./ sofa area immediately below that and the 'foot' to the right is an office area, but could also be used as a dining area as during the week we think we'll mainly be eating at the breakfast bar. The only thing you need to do is make sure the doors all open. Most kitchen units are 60cm x 60cm so 1.20cm at the very least between them. Think about giving yourself a bit more room between the counters if you cook together!

You should check the corner cupboards and make sure they're not obstructed so you can open them right up, Double door units the same, and then there are drawers... Best advice is make a plan and work out which door opens up where.

I just wanted to clarify that I am looking for your thoughts on the *recommended* gap between the counter runs, not the *minimum*.

Assume the kitchen space is not constrained - what would you say is ideal?

Im lazy and prefer a compact kitchen where I can reach everything so 1.20 cm - 1.50 cm suits me. Anything over 1.80 cm and it may feel like your walking a lot!

Personally I like to see two lots of long pan drawers under a hob and so I would choose a 2metre space for them meaning the room would be 3.2m.
In my opinion the length of the other side of the rectangle depends on the number of tall units you want- assuming there is room I would want a larder fridge, larder Freezer, two oven towers and a storage larder meaning that I would want a wall that was 3.6 m long at least.

1.2 m will work well providing that you allow for opening a large fridge door and include yourself in the corridor. E.G. you had a 90cm door to open - say on an American fridge freezer, it may feel awkward. The short end facing you needs careful planning- a common mistake is to put a big range cooker 1.2 wide without corner cupboards. A feature on this end wall if there is one will help create a successful scheme. Long open shelves the full width 1.2 of the room will add an illusion of stretching the room width ways. If you have tall cabinetry and want accommodate tall appliances keep them all on the same side. Hope that helps.
