Splashback For A Utility - Something Personal

We are thinking of having a splashback in our utility but rather than just a colour, we are looking at having a picture of something personal or of meaning to us.

We love our holidays to florida and Vegas and have thought about using something from either of those 2 holiday destinations as the splashback.

Has anyone got any funky or personal splashbacks in their homes?

I haven't but have seen them at a home show and it look fabulous. Definitely something I'd consider if I had the right photograph.

Pity you have decided against glass in favour of tiles. We have just done our kitchen and I wanted an easy-to-clean surface for the splash back, so the rough surface of grouting around tiles, and also the indentations on some patterned tiles (which collect grease and grime) ruled them out for me! I went for glass, which the manufacturers matched exactly to the duck egg paint colour on the other walls (just gave them a product code of the paint), and although the initial outlay for the glass was expensive, the surface is so brilliant to keep clean and it looks fab as well. I would definitely recommend, and you could match it to, say, your lovely pink/purple ceiling lights ...

You will need to allow for the pipes behind the washing machine. Therefore a standard 600mm deep will not allow sufficient room. Why will an integrated WM be too wide? Appliances are 600mm wide (unless you opt for American Fridge Freezers or slim chillers). I have a bank of tall units down one wall in my kitchen and the middle ones are deeper and they house the dryer and washer. Purpose made specifically for this reason. Personally i wouldn't deal with Howdens or similar sellers. Just look for an independent kitchen company. They will be able to offer a better choice of doors, definitely better quality laminate worktops (if you’re opting for laminate) and will be able to offer cut to size end panels/carcase sides therefore making it deeper which you need.

I’m confused about the layout. It looks like the entrance is directly into the kitchen area. Perhaps it would be useful to create a hall with storage. This then also means there is no access to the garden- would French doors from the lounge be useful? You say there are table in both rooms and the space is crowded. Presumably the plan is to reduce to one table- would you actually have to take down a wall to make that change? It seems like your parents are short of living space. Of course an extension would help but perhaps there are other possibilities such as converting the smaller bedroom into a full downstairs bathroom with laundry facilities. The cloakroom could be a new entrance in order to free up space in the kitchen area and create more space for dining. Since you are likely going to do some work to the house consider if there are things you could do now to future proof it. This means a walk in shower and a comfort height toilet, a raised washer and dryer, an eye level oven, door handles rather than knobs, innovative pull outs to make access to wardrobes and kitchen cabinets easier. If they don’t already use it consider smartening up the larger of the two downstairs bedrooms so it’s inviting rather than an inevitability. You might also consider outside lighting for security, relaying uneven patios to remove trip hazards, an electric garage door etc. And if your only concern about an open plan arrangement is cooking smells consider a really great extractor such as a Bora cooktop extractor.

There are companies which do back painted glass which you can have any image on the back of ! Back painted glass for a utility is very low maintenance so a good choice.
