Industrial Style Dining Room
We have recently moved into a Victorian terrace house and are
stuck with how best to decorate the dining room. It's in the middle of
our downstairs layout, with three doors off of it and is also the darkest room
in the house. My fear is that it will become a bit of a corridor space
that we'll essentially just walk through, especially if the room feels too
formal. Ideally I'd have it as a flexible space that could also be used as a
home office.
The only things we're keeping that are currently in the room are the dining table and sideboard. We're thinking of having some pendant lights hanging over the table and 6 Eames style dining chairs. The lighting and busy wallpaper will definitely go!
The question is, how best could we decorate it? We like the idea
of going for an industrial look. However I'm not sure how to achieve this
kind of look. We've wondered about exposing the original brickwork above the fireplace but don't know how feasible this would be. We're also open to other schemes apart from industrial though, and given the darkness of
the room we don't know whether to keep the colour scheme dark or light?
And any ideas for storage space? There's doors on two walls and
a long radiator along one the one opposte the fireplace, so we're a bit limited
layout wise.
Any inspiration would be very welcome!

7 years agoThe obvious solution for a desk and for storage, to me, are the recesses next to the fireplace. I would do a white, floating cabinet with doors and shelves above that to the left. Similar as in the enclosed pic. And a deeper shelf as a desk with shelves above it to the right. You could use one of the dining chairs as a desk chair.
Do lights under the shelves that are above the cabinet and above the desk.
I hope that you'll find a cool brick fireplace under that wallpaper.
I'd paint the walls a medium grey. A large mirror above the buffet will reflect light.

Comments (3)It looks like the little kitchen area has now gone so I would create a booth style seating area in that space. The piano I would then put at an angle in the other nook facing into the room as a feature corner. The rest of the seating would then be in the main central area. I think ultimately this depends on the budget you now have to finish the room, whether lighting can be changed to incorporate some features and task lighting/pendants. Have you considered having a designer look at the space? I work remotely and include lighting, layout and accessorising in my PDF remote designs. I like the table and it works well with the lights and I'd put the eames chairs with it or a mix of chairs (an old church chair is good for keeping kids colouring in stuff in but not sure of their age! ) What wood were you looking at? However having said that, your table is butt against the bar and the legs on this table are wider than the top so if you went for this one I think you'd need to go for a short table. As kikiamack said pedestal tables are good although hard to find a rectangular one (!) or as colourhappy said an old farmhouse one would work. Would an extending table also be an option? I first want to talk about lighting.. It may be a darker day that your image was taken, as I write today, there is a lack of sun.. I think you can create more light for that room. So my first suggestion is to buy the largest mirror you can get into the home and situate it if possible on that rear wall. I would suggest moving the rad to that section between the door to the garden and the arched doorway if at all possible or one that will fit into that space.. In this way you can have something like an 8ft by 6ft mirror to lean up against that rear wall.. It will not only be fabulous at reflecting light, but will also give you the appearance that the room is twice the size..
If you are to dine in here, candlelight and your main lighting will also look fabulous reflected back...
It's a gr8 way to add interest whatever the size of room.. If you could perhaps consider another way to store the books.. In this room it might be most beneficial to keep it as light as possible with less dense objects..
So have a think about the idea (if you want to retain the books) that you halve what is currently on the shelves, and divide them between the alcoves. Leaving the upper half bare, in this way you're re-distributing what you have but thinning out visually its impact.
You might also want to take out the stove in favour of a basket and logs for an open fire.. If the chimney breast is intact. They can look good as they are without an original surround.. You could add a mantle of some sort but it's not a necessity at all, and I would also suggest a large mirror for the chimney breast.. It too will add to the feature and focus of the room and reflect more light back into the room...
For pendant I would suggest something narrow and wide.. It will maximise the room spatially and balance it more.. I'll add a few things I think will work beautifully.. I also like Jonathan's idea of a roll top bureau which were also prevalent in the 50's up. Or you could have some small cabinets to store the books or what's on the shelves and remove the shelving entirely.. I'll add a visual. I have purposely left the wallpaper, so as to encourage you to consider the idea of something lighter but textural or interesting.. See how large reflective objects such as the mirrors offset the wall coverings beautifully.. :))
This kind of wallpaper would also give you texture and retain a lighter aesthetic which I feel is right for the room and your blonde furniture. I would use it on the chimney breast.. I think it has a lovely bright but warm feel plus it works with an industrial feel such as the metal table and chair in the image....
For actual lighting consider paring a pendant shade like the one in my image with interesting wall lighting, such as something like this... So it's a sophisticated mix of mid century elegance with an industrial twist... You can angle the light to where you want it..
Architecturally, perhaps consider opening out that arched doorway to unify the two rooms which will in turn add more light..

I would go for light colours for the walls and would whitewash the bricks if exposed.
Wooden/metal furniture and accessories with rustic/aged look will be perfect for the industrial interiors.

7 years agoYou could upgrade the radiator to a style more in keeping the industrial look such as our Core. This is shown in a short deep version, but we do it in lots of other heights, widths and depths, with and without feet.
