Hiding TV in Georgian-style living room

Hi

We're moving into a new home being built in Georgian style. We don't want our TV to be the focus in our living room. We've thought about hiding it behind a fake panel by the fireplace but can't get that to work with the dimensions.

Does anyone have any ideas for how to subtly hide it?

Thoughts gratefully received!

You could use a motorised mechanism, similar to the ones they use in beds and hide it inside a sideboard/chest. You can get such furniture ready made, but the choice may be limited. This is the sort of thing http://www.tv-lifts.co.uk/sitting-room-tv-cabinets.php

Or you could go for one of those sets that looks like a mirror when switched off.

If you really don't want gadgets then put it in a normal cabinet and have doors in front of the set, or fake books.

Hi , even if building in a bookcase , you can have doors to cover uo when not in use, they slide into carcus of bookcase when been used

Dear Hiba. The images below might offer some ideas for your design; we had this made for our client by a local joiner. Cable management is to both the TV and speakers (not shown in these images - they were fitted later, but we had already sourced them so knew the relevant shelf spacing). We also knew dimensions of the TV and the bracket, hence the projection and size of the aperture. We had the option to fit all the hifi equipment, amplifier, blu ray, etc in the unit, but the base would have projected 500mm into the room, so we decided to run the cables in the wall and beneath the floor to a second cabinet out of shot where there was more space. Lighting is a great feature to consider - we recessed low profile LEDs into the shelves (only 8mm deep) so as to hide the fittings but you see the effect of the light. The other thought is to work out what needs to be stored there (hence shelf and drawer sizes), what can be displayed, and what needs to be shut behind closed doors or in drawers. Regarding drawers and doors, depending on your style, your joiner can fit knobs / handles, or you may choose push-to-open cabinetry. Hello Maria, It's an interesting room actually and firstly my suggestion is to paint the orange white as a base. You can then gauge light levels more easily which would then inform you as to how to treat the room. Removing the balustrade completely opens the room as the steps and split level arrangement can still denote separation.. Which you can use accordingly either by situating sofa or perhaps a console and then sofa or even just a console or low cabinet here with something decorative on it.. ... Viewing the back of a sofa or low piece with something lovely like a vase and floral arrangement or something decorative is a rather nice way to introduce if you like, another area of a room and give it a sleeker form of separation if that is required.. I also rather like the idea of having a more open split level arrangement.... Perhaps consider a fire that you can use.. Look into flueless fires as an alternative.. OR possibly even a small black wood burning stove with a twin wall flue. There are options you can research and look into which I think could be nice.. Store a pile of logs underneath the space is ideal. If you want to lighten the floor consider rugs and other layers here that can really be used as a basis for your design.. Placing the sofa facing the fireplace is really an idea focal point.. with armchair opposite angled towards the sofa and fireplace.. It could be a 3 seater with a matching square foot stool which you can sit at one end to create a chaise longue arrangement for something less formal.. Another idea I like is to have again a sofa facing the fireplace and then possibly two chairs with a small table in between at the side with their backs to the sliding door, but in a way that means they don't block the view or flow of the room.. Try things out and see what works for you and the room... You want to keep flow through the space and decorate as 1 space even if the rooms are functioning separately.. Layering colour is an ideal way to decorate and add texture. Situating a flat screen in a cabinet is a nice way to hide the tv as it's not what you want people to focus on when they come to your home.. So perhaps take out the shelving entirely in favour of a cabinet that could house the screen when you want to watch a film etc. There are really some fantastic elements to your new home- the rads are fantastic and I do like the fireplace.. I think you could make this fabulous.. Add textural and warm coloured elements to the sofa arms etc.. I can see earthy and warm tones with rich luxuriant additions.. such as cushions, throws and large floral arrangements for coffee table or side tables to add interest and finish the space .... :))

Plan B? TV too high - solving TV neck ache We have been installing TVs above fireplaces for the past 15 years. Our recommendation is that you should leave at 50-100cm clearance from the top of the fireplace to the bottom of the TV. I am assuming that the black cover above the fireplace does a good job of stopping the heat rising? However, a protruding mantelpiece to further deflect/minimise the effect of heat thermals would help. We have a similar idea in the bedroom as didn't want the T.V on show, We used the top part of an Edwardian Mirrored chest of drawers, turned it into a cabinet and ran the cables down the unused Chimney breast, so no wires either. Anything is possible with the right chap making it!
