Recessed Plaster Shelf - what to do??

This monstrosity of plaster work slap bang in the middle of my living room wall has bugged me since the day I moved in. I've put a large picture over it for now, but it's still visible. Would you pay for someone to just remove it and plaster over the wall, or is there anything I can do with it to make it more contemporary??

By the way, the thing hanging above it is a Japanese wooden arrow from a shrine in Tokyo.
