Giving Victorian floorboards a pale treatment

Hello!

We're about to move into a Victorian house where all the floorboards have been lovingly restored. They are a rather orangey colour though, varnished I think and I'd like to give them a really pale, blonde wood treatment (almost limed but not). Does anyone have experience of doing this with older floors? I'm expecting to have to sand them all back, but beyond that I've no idea where to go from there.

I think I would maybe try a pale grey carpet upstairs as it looks great against white woodwork. Maybe then have a striped runner going up the stairs picking up the grey with the treads in white? You could always add a brighter colour stripe in if you want more interest or you may be able to find one with a bright trim. Strong white by the way is a very pale grey (sorry just in case you didn't know as it doesn't really show as such in the pic as its up against the dark grey downpipe). I think it's quite hard to make a period property bland if it's got architectural features. If a console table doesn't fit, add one in the square part of the hall and have a gallery of art or photos etc. Panelling would make it feel wider but there's the cost to consider. Maybe a long narrow bench? I have this bench from french connection which would be perfect size ( as only 20cm deep ) but maybe a little contemporary. Maybe something ornamental placed on the top of the landing to draw your eye up? You could also try hanging a few lights down the hall which will make it feel shorter. What type of front door do you have by the way? Is any of it glazed?

Hello Elodie, One thing I would do to make the living room feel bigger is take out the shelving either side of the chimney breast. One of my personal hates with fireplaces.. If you painted the chimney breast a nice colour like a dark teal (fantastic with tan sofa, woods etc) that would stand out and the alcoves a creamy colour like whitening.. You could have the opposite wall in teal too, which really works with the floorboards, wood and a fantastic sofa or two like those in the picture! They are gr8!!! In the alcoves you could then have another mirror and a small side table or console with a lamp.. I'd be inclined to want to reveal all of the boards and maybe have a small rug here and there or not at all! It's lovely! I would have continued the floor boards in the kitchen and the entire house. Wooden venetian blinds with tapes would be nice even on the kitchen windows and I do agree that the curtain pole in the living room is too high.. Could be a nicer looking one with Voile type fabric... Change the light fitting in the living room to something that hangs down even a little... Something pretty in glass.. with a ceiling rose. You could even add a small cornice... I would have a large mirror leaning on that panelled wall too, if you painted it the same colour as that wall for instance it would blend in.. Would give the idea of more space and extra light.. can never have too much even if it is bright.. Ebay oversized mirrors is a good place to start.. They are not originals but who cares.. You can paint it to look old, but an idea anyway.. The kitchen cupboards are nice! Maybe paint the knobs fully the same colour as the cupboards so they don't stand out.. and the only thing I'd suggest changing is the sink. A really nice butler sink could go really nicely with the tap.. Cream Smeg old 50's style fridge and a gas hob.. Can't see the oven... Wooden venetian with tapes for the window... For the bedroom I like the mirror there... Maybe carry the teal colour onto that wall.. Leave the rest chalky cream.. Have a chest at the foot of the bed if you can manage it and a chest of drawers too if possible.. Then you can get a bigger bed.. Can I see a little fireplace.. Don't take that out.. it's lovely.. blinds again in the bedroom... You can also put in some over head shelving... keep the shelves the same as the walls, that way they blend in... Think the place has a lot of character and really very lovely.... : ))

Thanks Ensign! The magnolia comment was just about a temporary measure as the majority of the room is already magnolia and we have some leftover from recent touch ups to our rental. Definitely won't be magnolia long term. We originally had a room by room plan, but got waylaid as we had to rip out carpets and wallpaper from upstairs immediately to get rid of smells. Downstairs we haven't touched the kitchen/utility, although we have had to strip both halls, again due to smell. With the exception of dealing with the floor, our bedroom will be finished first as it doesn't need any tradesman input. Everything else will have to be done in bits and pieces as and when we can afford to get trades in to plaster/ deal with pointing outside causing damp and so on.

Well it's great to have the comments. It's actually taken away my anxiety about the room and I can think clearly now. Sandra your advice about what makes you happy in a room made me smile.. you are right. You also confirmed my thoughts on a cast iron fireplace, it would be too imposing, and I think a wood burner would become a burden after a while as well as being a bit "cottagy," I have thought about a gas stove, a slightly more contemporary looking one in a rendered, painted recess, with a reclaimed surround, or open gas fire? I'd love to see your fireplace Sandra when you get the time to post a photo. Minnie, thank you for the link. The ideas are so good I do like the white fireplace, and the nod to the 1930's is good advice. I think now I will start to enjoy this renovation. I am going to try the tv in another area of the room, although my husband doesn't like them on the wall. It is a good idea on the wall near the alcove though, I need to have a good look at the room with fresh eyes. Love the idea of the curtains and slimline sofas. It's all great advice and Nicola thank you for your offer with information regarding the bay pole from Fabricant. I am based in the South East so I will be very interested when it comes to doing the curtains... which I think will be a long way off yet. I feel I'm getting somewhere now by eliminating the wood burner and the cast iron fireplace. I am so glad I posted on here! I'll be planning and researching this week end. Much appreciated.
