Mid century style cladding / painting for split level facade update

Would love any thoughts / suggestions / references as to how best to update the current condition of this split level facade.

To me its a bit messy and would like to make it look more uniform. Have mocked up painting it all black.

Should the air conditioner units be concealed by some outdoor screening with wood or something else? Open to any ideas or suggestions.

I like the idea to paint it black looks great ! The aircon unit could be screened with black aluminium , is low maintenance, longer lasting , and keep in mind space for ventilation .

For me it’s maximalism. Lovely in a quirky cafe or boutique hotel but at home it would give me a headache. I like a restful house and so yes quite a lot of it is grey! Not battleship grey or anthracite but bluey or greeny greys. Concrete floors. Depressing, cold, ecologically not great, look unfinished. Plants very high up. How do you water them? Walk in wardrobes even if it means the bedroom becomes tiny. I’d rather have a bigger bedroom with wardrobes in it, than dress and sleep in tiny spaces. Uber industrial. There’s a reason we usually hide cables, conduits, vent ducts...because they are ugly. Buying new furniture and accessories very often to have an “up to date“ look. I see all these instagram pictures with everything brass, mid century, wood, rattan, green (today’s trends) and I wonder what has happened to all their grey, painted, silver, shabby chic items from 5/10 years ago. And what will they do with today’s items when the look swings round again...

We have just purchased what we hope to be our last house. It is a very big plot and we are looking to knock down and get planning for a very large house over 4 floors. (12,000 sq ft). We know what we want internally however our issue lies with the external look and feel. My wife wants classic new build, with pillar entrance, sash box windows with stone cills or surroundings (Surrey Commuter belt!). I like contempory white, modern, square, glass walls, feature cladded walls with balconies (Beverly Hills!) Our compromise is classic at the front contempory at the rear. We need help! Hopeful designjunction will help offer solutions so we can move forward.

Completely agree with Jonathan. I have seen a couple of 70s houses modernised fantastically in my area, both with some type of grey/grey wood cladding in parts. It retains the 'character' (I'm sure in 50 years time this architecture will be to die for!) whilst giving it a modern twist. I also think the house is very 'garage heavy' so I would get a really modern garage door (possibly wooden) and try and have a balcony above to distract from it. See this fab example... Looks good :) I don't know whether it fits but could the piano go in the radiator corner (although not right in) facing the other way? I might just try painting the picture frames personally. If you've got any left over paint I'd also just paint the radiators in the wall emulsion and see what you think. I don't know whether this would work structurally plus you may hate them (!) but I feel like a hanging chair could work next to the tv. It would need to be a slimmish one and I'd go for one that doesn't visually feel the space too much

RE: screening, I was thinking a wood deck style might look nice also in front of the air conditioners? is this ok for air con units?

I would check with manufacturer or an A/C install company as it may restrict airflow.

Wood screening also looks good ,although I feel the black is more uniform , tidy and harmonious with overall look, could also be done with black aluminium screening , as low maintenance and longer lasting . Re screening of air con units, If done in this way , consider access to air con units , also ventilation around air con units. Enough spacing between panels for air flow.
