Wooden Floors & Doors Advice

Hi, my house is being renovated and I am having wooden floor throughout my ground floor. I am also having all my internal doors replaced. Initially I wanted oak doors but I think having wooden floors and wooden doors will look too much so I have decided white doors would be better. However, unless I want to spend a fortune which I cannot afford then the options seem to be either white mdf doors with veneer and I am worried they may look cheap or wooden doors pained and I am worried that will cost a lot more and painted wooden doors will also not look so good.

Also, I did not realise how many different types of wooden floors there are?! I have chosen engineered but not sure whether to go for a shiny or matt look? I like wood with knots and wide panels but need to decode on shiny or matt first?......What do you think?

I would welcome some advice and thanks so much in advance.

Is there any reason why you said that painted wooden doors would not look good? Some simple pine doors will be inexpensive, then you can just paint them. Either ask you decorator to paint them or if budget is really tight then you could paint them yourself. This will look great with a wood floor. Alternatively you can consider the mdf veneer option but just make sure you see one in person first to check the quality is acceptable.

Regarding the wooden floor, an oiled (matt) finish is usually more popular over lacquered (shiny) but it's personal preference. An oiled finish will need re-oiling every so often and can be more susceptible to marks and stains. A lacquer is more durable but can be prone to scratches. My advice would be to get down to a showroom and start looking at some to see what you're drawn to. Start with what you know you like (wood with character and knots, wide boards) to help narrow it down. Buy one pack and lay it out on the floor to see how it looks as a larger sample too.

I would choose the solid pine doors over veneered as they have better longevity . They will look great painted, and of course, they are easily sanded back gently and re-painted to freshen or to change the colour entirely as and when you tire of them. Choose either a Satinwood paint for a glisten rather than shiny finish, or gloss for super shiny. Either will look fabulous with your wooden floor. Most trade professionals i am sure would agree that Dulux is best for the job.

In theory if it's a floor paint it should be able to handle the moisture. I would recommend an oil top coat just to make sure but I'm confident as long as it's a genuine floor paint moisture won't be a problem. It's a lot of work if you want to strip the floor boards etc but my real concern is the finish as it wouldn't exactly be waterproof

Hi John Sapele is from the mahogany family and is more readily available as a solid timber, the engineered format is usually more expensive than Grandis. Grandis is from the eucalyptus family and is readily available in engineered format making it slightly cheaper. but they are both good hardwoods and both ideal for doors and windows however we would personally always opt for engineered timber for stability unless using Accoya timber. We use engineered wood in virtually all of our exterior joinery projects as it is much more stable to work with compared to solid timber sections and is much less likely to warp or twist in wet/humid conditions. Depending on the finish you want on your door and whether or not you live in an exposed area e.g. by the sea would help us deciding on a certain timber for your needs. If you want a stained wooden door then you can not beat Engineered Oak. If you are opting for a painted finish then we would advise on Engineered Grandis. It is a more affordable hardwood that looks great when painted. If you live in an exposed area then Accoya is fantastic, it is a softwood that has had the cell structure altered using a natural process to stop it from absorbing moisture. The benefits of this is that Accoya timber will last 50 years above sea level and the shrinkage and swelling is reduced by 75% which reduces your maintenance costs long term. It can be painted or if you prefer it can be stained to look like Oak. Accoya is a more expensive timber due to its properties. For painted windows we still think Engineered Redwood is a great affordable option, it is a very hard "softwood" and works well for windows but we would never advise that it is used on doors as it doesn't last. Again if you want your windows to be stained then we would suggest Engineered Oak or Accoya. Hope this helps, good luck with your search and let us know if you have any further questions.

For me it would be looks, insulation and being able to repaint in the future....so more questions if anyone is patient enough with me! 1. Can a composite door be repainted in the future? 2. Is there a benefit in keeping the house warm? I am wondering if the actual body of the door is an insulator, so is a composite door filled with something to insulate against the the cold or is a wooden door as 'warm'. Or is the insulating factor dependent on the quality of either door; good composite, good wood is better than cheaper versions of both? 3. Again about insulation, is the 'warm' factor not linked to the body of the door at all but to the fit in the frame? The wooden door we will be replacing, due to the build, will open straight into the kitchen. Hadnt expected this to be quite as confusing. Thanks to those for advising.

I have solid wood flooring in most of my house, tiling in the kitchen and hall. We bought the wood unfinished and did all of the finishing ourselves (it was already sanded). Cost wise it worked out around £30 per square metre which is really good. Most of the wood I finished in Osmo Oil either Raw first and then clear or white first and then clear. It does darken and warm with age so this needs to be factored in when designing colour palettes. If you like fairly neutral palettes this can work well, if you prefer lots of colour then a more consistent Amtico product or factory finished wood may be preferable. I wanted to be able to re-finish and re-oil my floors if necessary. I have LVT in my studio which is really practical and looks good, however it doesn't feel like wood.

Feioi is right - oiled floors result in a more natural matt or slight sheen surface and if a high traffic area starts to wear you can easily apply more oil to just that spot. Lacquer is harder wearing but will eventually scratch and will need the whole floor sanded back and re-lacquered. This understandably puts lots of people off so the oiled finish is much more popular now.

I've got oiled engineered floorboards upstairs and lacquered parquet floors downstairs and much much prefer the oiled finish. If we ever get the parquet re-done I'll for the oiled finish instead.
