Living room rugs - plain or patterned?

With so many rugs on the market, it can be hard to choose between them! For example, do you go for plain or patterned? Tell us which style you have gone for in your living room?

I love colour and I tend to like plain rather than patterns, except for rugs where I like to bring in some pattern ... to pull all the other colours of the room together. This rug is perfect for my living room, it could have been custom made.

I wish there were more options for larger patterned rugs. There are some out there but they cost more than all my furniture combined! Patterned is preferred for me but I have plain because it's all I could afford in the size I needed.

Hi,painting the walls white will suit the room and over your fireplace a really nice mirror , as for your rug on the floor pick out the green and then complement it withe maybe some orange or cerise cushions and throws, you can always try different colours shops will always change or refund if you don,t like what you have chosen , good luck

HI, thank you so much for all your help and opinions!! The photoshop is great, its really helped me have a real picture of what the lounge will look like!! I do think the first rug goes best however the 3rd option you sent through also goes well. Ah, I can't wait to get in and start decorating!! :) With regards to the wallpaper, i initially thought to put it on all walls however I'm wondering whether to have a feature wall and the others painted, do you think wallpaper all over would be too much?

I think a navy rug will match very well, and I like your first example as it has a little yellow without being overpowering. I also think a colourful Persian rug would look amazing and bring warmth to the room. You can buy them second hand on eBay. New ones are pretty pricey. Here’s some ideas, they may be too colourful for you, but I thought I’d just throw these in the mix!

I am a big fan of keeping walls and furniture neutral and then adding texture, pattern and colour through my accessories. Patterned rugs all the way!

I find I mostly gravitate towards patterned rugs, especially a geometric pattern or an ikat kilim rug. West Elm and Francesca Gentilli have some beautiful ones, in all shapes, sizes and prices! Although a great, affordable option is the Ikea Lohals rug, a lovely flat woven alternative if you want to play it safe with a plain rug.

I recommend geometric and floral patterns because they add splash of colour and design that provide the ultimate statement piece & pulls your whole interior scheme together.

Mine are old Turkish rugs, rather threadbare now, I like the dark reds, blues and greens in them and do not worry too much about anything being spilt on them, or them being chewed by the pups. I do like plain rugs, but feel I'd spend all my time trying to keep them clean, there's a lot to be said for a pattern hiding a multitude of sins.

We make bespoke rugs here in Scotland and it is interesting that your voting pattern as of today's date just about mirrors the proportion we make in the different design styles! Must admit Geometric has been running strongly in the last 6 months.

It's very difficult to find the perfect patterned rug so I usually stick to plain even though I prefer patterned. Striped? Awful.
