Our new "old" garden

We've just bought our first house and it has a great front and back garden, which have been maintained but only just so.

I've just cleared out all the nettles and suckers from the hedges and now need inspiration for what to do with the cleared out beds.

The garden is south facing so the bits close to the house / next to the shed get a lot of sun.

The back garden is shadier because there are trees.

Close to the house I'd like to grow some herbs and maybe fruit that can easily be picked.

Otherwise flowers or plants that will look nice ...

Also, should I plant anything now that Autumn is coming soon?

I find pots are best for herbs. They look lovely mixed in with a few flowers and you can also grow strawberries and tomatoes in pots. Is it possible to move your shed further down the garden if this is where you get the most sun?

Jobs for autumn could be planting up pots with spring flowering bulbs, pruning bushes , hard landscaping like moving the shed and creating seating areas and also improving your lawn. As with houses I find it best to live with a garden for a year (if possible!) before doing any major work as then you can see how you use it, what plants you have and what grows/doesn't grow. For an instant lift you can plant bedding plants in the borders you've cleared.

Thanks for that! The shed is pretty solid and would require significant building work to move, so no luck there.

I've already move the mint to a pot and cleared a lot of the hedges.

I guess next up will be planting bulbs then.

Is there anything I can buy that's already grown a little that will survive the winter?

Gooseberries are a useful fruit. They don't mind some shade, have pretty leaves and the fruit freezes beautifully - nothing better than a lovely gooseberry crumble in winter. You can get them as standards too, so can be quite decorative. They need to be staked well and pruned so the heads don't get too weighty but if you had a pair you'd get a pretty good crop the second year and some the first. Invicta is a good variety and you can get it as standards. Just google! If you want to cover a fence with fruit you could plant a blackberry. Oregon thornless is an excellent cultivated variety with very pretty deeply cut leaves, far more so than the standard bramble, and of course it is thornless. Occasionally it throws up a thorny shoot which needs cutting off. Again, you would need to prune, cutting off the fruited shoots each year and tying in the new shoots. Rhubarb also doesn't mind shade, and you can get terracotta rhubarb forceps to go over it to bring on an earlier crop - look decorative when not much is growing.

The Edwardian fireplace is the correct proportion and age for the house. Hard to tell if it is actually original to the house or if it is Mahogany or Oak, but don't paint it. Wood has a beauty of its own if treated with a natural finish like Beeswax and the patina of age adds to the beauty. Certainly don't varnish it. One of the reasons it appears heavy in the photo is the oak surround on the hearth tiles. My advice would be to remove the wood hearth surround and install a wood floor in the room (perhaps oak and slightly lighter in colour than the fireplace butting up to the tiled hearth). This will will compliment the fireplace and ground it. You could remove the tiles (normally I would keep original tiles) but the cream and maroon colours in this instance do give an overall heaviness and don't particularly enhance the fireplace, however I would leave the tiles for the moment. The finished scheme should look classy and elegant with a neutral colour palette. If this is going to be a working fireplace than you may consider a grey slate hearth. This is the focal point of your room so getting it right is key. Wherever possible conserve original features. The 1930's fireplace on the opposite side would appear original and most likely installed in the 30's. It is charming but not proportionally correct for an Edwardian house. But because it tells a story and is original I would be loath to remove it. Selling it on would be tricky as the tiles will most likely damage when removing them. I would keep both fireplaces as they will both sit well in a neutral colour scheme with a wooden floor.

I would look at a standard laurel. Something like this will cost around £120 each for a decent size. You should plant these every 120cm-150cm. Don't forget that you can add height by building a raised border around the perimeter. You could also look at Photinia Red Robin. But get them professionally pruned each year as photinias will get very straggly if you just trim the outside branches as you need to take out some of the centre wood to promote thicker growth.

In terms of winter bedding plants? yes the garden centres will soon be full of them things like pansies, christmas roses and cyclamen. Perennials will survive the winter and autumn is a good time to plant but they will die back over winter and regrow in spring.
