I have an old fashioned dado rail in hall and up stairway how do I mak
Comments (8)I would make a feature of it; it adds character and structure and takes the eye sweepingly along and up which is good for adding a sense of space. Could you paint it a colour that ties in with something else - the flooring or a rug, for example? Or you could put patterned wallpaper or a different colour paint below and a lighter shade above it. You could also hang pictures in the feature shapes above though if they aren't original I'd be tempted to get rid of them. I'd move away from the rather feminine and twee decoration and make it bolder, stronger....See MoreBefore & after replacing an old fashioned bay conservatory in London

Comments (23)Hi, I think I’d take the lead from whether you LIKE the fireplace or not. If so would you keep it as is or paint it? Then go from there as its the ideal time to rip it out if you decide it’s not for you no matter how trendy it may or may not be. If you keep it - I think you are right to add a more fitting fire and tv placement would depend on how much it makes you crane you neck and how well you can hide leads etc. My parents had a similar fireplace when we grew up with an extra matching brick area to the right which my Dad build to put the tv on and he even made a cupboard for the vhs to go in! Good luck...See Morehi i have a rockery and crazy paving ...old fashioned looking.
Comments (10)Hi there, I agree with Sarah. The crazy paving path does look like it is coming appart, and therefore I would try and replace that too. I would also make it a bit wider than it is at the moment (a bit more comfortable to walk on, especially if carrying garden tools etc.). You could use bricks to match the short wall that you have there or maybe bound gravel with an edging of bricks would also look charming. I would also line it with some planting, maybe some lavenders, cat mint or something else aromatic. For the gravelled area that you have at the moment, it looks like it is your seating area? If this is the case I would go for a more solid type of paving with a naturalistic look such as sandstone or yorkstone, and maybe have a brick edging as well just to connect the different spaces of the garden. I offer a range of online garden design services (from budget friendly sketches to full on garden plans) and would be happy to help you with this project should you need any more help. my website for details and portfolio is: www.therootedconceptgardendesign.co.uk Please do not hesitate to get in touch if you are interested!
