Which style of internal doors for our mixed period cottage? And what t

Our former gardener's cottage has a small part dating from the 17th Century, another part dating from the 1930s, another from the 1980s, the late 1990s and a upvc conservatory! Currently the doors downstairs are all variations of Victorian 4 panel reclaimed pine (not all standard sizes and poorly fitting) with brass knobs. Upstairs are 4 panel shaker pine or pine and plywood 1950s style doors, with mostly brass, some Bakelite knobs - also varying sizes.

1. We want to unify the internal doors throughout the house and make them fit properly and give better sound proofing. We are thinking of new oak doors (some shortlisted styles attached), but which style to go for?

2. We also want to replace the softwood front door (shown) with a better quality hardwood door - should we stick with the current style?

So many decisions! Advice gratefully received.

I would go for the Victorian Shaker doors without doubt.

As for the external door, I think the existing style works but for my tastes it could do with more interest. I would look for double glazed stained glass inserts or paint the door a more striking colour - or possibly both.

Of the styles pictured I would go for the bottom one (the Suffolk), but would suggest old fashioned planked, ledged and braced doors complete with Suffolk latches. The advantage of this is that it will be very easy to get them made to fit non-standard door openings and get the proportions right, rather than losing them by having to cut too much off width/height of standard sized doors that have panels/frames.

Sorry I cannot contribute re the style of the doors. Only wanted to encourage you to consider black doors. While I liked black doors I saw on Houzz, I was not sure how they would have looked in reality. My husband was really sceptical which did not help either. However I made the leap and never looked back! But I painted black only two doors with glass inserts in the sitting room. The rest of the rooms have white doors, but only because our house in not particularly flooded with light.

Just personal opinion but I think I'd put a shaker kitchen in a period cottage. If it's set in stone I'd soften it with wooden shelves, chopping boards etc. If you like the red based neutrals then I might look at adding some brown red (excuse the picture!) in the kitchen for either patterned tiles or a patterned wallpaper on one wall which would bring the cottage feel and character back (you can protect wallpaper with polyvine dead flat varnish). Not a colour expert at all but if you weren't set on the red tones then maybe an olive green or dirty ochre would work with the black and white?

I’m with the keepers! I think you might end up devaluing your house if you took out all the original features such as the doors, latches etc. I think you need to experiment with some colours for the walls and look at replacing the carpet which is a bit of a cold grey colour. Also have you looked into the history of the house as I don’t think the leaded lights look like original arts and crafts style to me!

My initial thought is your house is very wide and not particularly tall. Rendering the top will accentuate the look. Render is expensive but is cost competitive with brick when combined with cheap block work. Matching new and old bricks is never perfect. Using panels of render to separate new and old will disguise any difference. Another trick is to acid wash the old bricks first so you can match new to clean bricks rather than those with 50 years of weathering. Personally I would render the front door section ground to roof and avoid modern window colours. Fashions change far quicker than most of us will want to change our windows.

The only issue with ledged and brace with traditional fittings is the draftproof element. They do tend to curl way from the stops in my experience. If you have the money id go for a framed ledge and brace or any other style you fancy made bespoke for you to suit your sizes. If sound / draft proofing is an issue you can put a seal in the door stop that the door shuts tight against cutting out all draft and noise.

Thank you everyone for your advice, which was really helpful! Front door has been done and am delighted with it. Internal doors are hopefully not far behind ... have gone with Suffolk style.
