Your home vs. your childhood home?
Comments (21)We lived in a 3 bed semi until I was 11. Half of it faced due north, so there was a room we never ever used. Then we moved to a 4 bed, which we needed, as there were 6 kids. I absolutely loved the second house. It didn't face any direction fully, so it got sun in most rooms at some stage. It was on a turning circle in a cul de sac, so it looked really small from the front, but had an irregularly shaped extension at the side that was completely soundproof.( My brothers could play their music really loudly and noone ever complained). This opened out into a huge garden, which my mother made absolutely beautiful. My parents built two patios in it together and my mother built her own flower bed, using dry stone walling techniques. My parents had lots of midcentury furniture, some of which was made by my father from a book on Swedish design. You could buy the orange sofa he made now! There was a little gazebo in the garden which turned out to be a monk's cell, the last part of the abbey that had been there. A tree in our garden was pruned by a man who happened to have come there as an apprentice tree surgeon, and he was able to tell us that it had had a bench all the way around the inside. It fell down during Hurricane Charlie, as the front wall was leaning, but my father rebuilt it over the course of 9 years. My mother's style is way ahead of her time; their bedroom has been duckegg blue and brown for about 20 years!...See MoreLive Chat: How to inject colour into your home with Bright Bazaar
Comments (28)A5) I would start by giving yourself a focal point to refer back to when you are choosing new cushions. This could be a hero piece of artwork hung behind the sofa, or a rug on the floor, for example. Take a picture of this piece on your phone so you can have it with you to compare side by side with new cushions when you are in a shop and making a decision on whether you think they will sit well alongside the artwork within the space. When it comes to pattern, consider the 60/30/10 approach. Stick to 60 percent of a favourite pattern, 30 percent of a second pattern, and 10 percent of a third as an accent. My key tip when you are mixing those patterns together is to mix up the size of the patterns, and be sure to break them up with a solid, too. For example, you could pair a narrow stripe with a medium size geometric or a large-scale floral pattern. When you layer in solids, make sure the colour is from the same colour family as one of the other patterned pieces to keep the overall look cohesive....See Moreshould the decor of the house match throughout?
Comments (2)Firstly, it's your house so don 't worry too much about what it 'should' be like! In my experience, I had some very definite ideas about some of our rooms and no clue about others. Once we moved in- 8 months ago- I realised very quickly that some jobs had to take priority, like blinds and couches for the living room, a new cooker in the kitchen, painting the kids' bedrooms. Other things were done as we had time and funds! We're now at a stage where a lot of the house is almost where we want it to be but no room is completely finished. It's interesting to me how my own ideas have changed as the house changes. For example, I loved the living room paint so much, I also used it in the bedroom, even though I had previously had a different colour scheme in mind. The hall and landing were painted in a colour that I had originally sampled for the living room, as I realised it would work better with the lighting in the hall. I've also found that some of my random purchases have influenced the direction of a room. My new bookcases which are being installed this month will be sprayed in a colour inspired by a map I bought by chance when I was shopping for a frying pan! I suppose my point is that rooms, and houses, evolve. It's impossible to plan exactly how it will look in the end. My advice would be to take your time with major decisions and don't sweat the small stuff. Enjoy the process rather than getting hung up on the end result....See MoreDoes neutral decor really sell a home?
Comments (29)No such thing as a "run of the mill" house if I'm involved! : ) ) Teasing aside though, every house/flat/apartment or room for that matter, can present itself to it's full potential and is just waiting to be unlocked..So for me that means colour dark or light.. I never see a home, room or space I cannot instantly imagine and make beautiful... There is always a way.. Buyers see visuals first so making an impact can be rather important with competition! A house should really sell itself.. With so much competition it's got to be how attractive it is to get it noticed, and then... is it in my budget....Every other checklist happens after those initial two. Assuming you have already decided on a location..... I do agree though the display of one's sock collection or the latest in Aussie bum pants are not desirable! : ))...See Moregilliifer
