Would like window shutters but what would go with brown upvc windows?

Would really like window shutters in my lounge and bedrooms but I have brown upvc windows and don't really want to chose dark shutters. Any advice on what colour scheme to go with. Have been thinking of cream but my bedroom is grey and silver so don't think it would go.

Ours seem to be absolutely fine. They were lightly sanded, primed and painted in Dulux Satinwood, Opening the windows, which we do every day, does not seem to affect the paint on the frames in the slightest. Of course, you have to ensure that all painted surfaces are totally dry before closing them for the first time, All of our windows bar one is painted inside, 17 of them have openers and all are fine even after several years.

I think you'll have to go with white or whatever looks best indoors in those rooms. You can always think about getting the windows colour bonded at some point instead of replacing them. Then you can choose any colour for those inside and out!

You can paint UPVC yourself - All of our windows inside are painted the same colour as the walls in those rooms so that the windows blend into the walls. They were dark brown / mahogany ( vile ) - Outside they are all sage green.

If you're going to paint the frames inside which will brighten the rooms and let you have whatever colour shutters you like, use Zinsser 1-2-3 primer and then paint away.

I think grey shutters would look great - everyone has white ones! I agree with Man About The House that you should go with what you like/what looks good rather than be dictated by the brown windows. Painting them is a good temporary fix. In my opinion it doesn't always look good but can work if it's done well. Also, you'll probably find you won't see it too much once the shutters are in. People tend to keep the shutters closed and just tilt the louvres to let light through. Good luck!

I love both but it depends on the property and the overall style of the house. i reallydont like UPVC, they are too bulky and tend to detract from any house that ever has them but if you are insistent i would go grey although dark grey would look better on the house above. I presume that the render is going to be painted?

I would go to a reclamation yard and look at their 50s front doors/ windows. We have the same problem... All pvc windows/ door in our new house! Which I hate! We have bought a 30s original front door on eBay; the plan is to replace first front door and square pvc window next to it to original wooden ones. Just changing these 2 only should already put charm back to the house for not too much expense !! Especially if painted a lovely colour and adding lovely door ironmongery, plants, house number...

Hi there, As you mention the recess is an issue, you could either fit outside the recess or choose an option called PerfectFit. These blinds are available as Roller, Pleated and Venetian styles and clip into the uPVC window frames and become an integral part of the window. Alternatively, you could have Roman blinds like Daisy suggests, but fit them higher than the windows outside the recess. You'd also get more light when they are pulled up too as they'd stack outside of the window itself. A few options there - PerfectFit blinds really are clever so I'd urge you to have a look. Here's a close up of how they look (please note, this is a Top-Down, Bottom-Up option where the tabs can be pulled from both the top and the bottom of the window). Good luck with your search, Zoe

Andrea I'd go white, I'm thinking about doing the same thing.

Man About the House, with painted UPVC inside, how does the finish cope with the constant opening and closing of the transoms etc.?

When you talk about 'colour bonding' is that simply professional spray painting or does it refer to some other special process? Is it very expensive? Are we talking £100's or £1000's to do it? I'd love to do the internals of my kitchen window and French doors, possibly the conservatory too.

The colour bonding - is spray painting professionally, but they usual special paints. We had ours done for the guarantee of 10 years by NW Window Repairs

We didn't want to replace the windows as they were in good condition, but we had tired of the dark wood look. Replacement window quotes came in on average at around £9k.

However, for just over £2.5k we had all the windows & utility room ( which wasn't included on the original replacement quote ) + the Conservatory and Garage ( also which were not on the replacement quote ). I was very happy as the wife was delighted and we think we got a lot for our money!

Hi Andrea we have supplied and fitted white shutters to a lot of dark windows and they still look great, i will attach a couple of photos for you thanks Kevin window shutters

Kevin, I’m in the same situation as the OP brown frames (timber) and would like white or cream shutters but not sure how they would look from the outside. Do you have any pictures of brown frames light coloured shutters taken from the outside ?
