Extending upper floor of Victorian terraced house

We're buying a Victorian house with a downstairs bathroom. It doesn't bother me greatly but I love a project, and because the two children's bedrooms are small I'm wondering whether there's a clever solution to gaining more space and adding some sort of loo or shower room in the future. The current owners did a lovely job on a side extension crating a light filled kitchen/diner. I can't see how you could extend on the first floor without losing light to bedroom two? I also don't know yet what the state of the loft is (ie re converting). Thanks!
