Exterior wall colour to go with Hardwick White (Farrow&Ball) woodwork?

One of these terraced cottages (left of photo) is ours. We're planning to do the exterior woodwork (doors and windows) in F&B Hardwick White.

Would love to do a soft, maybe pastel exterior wall colour, warm and substantial, not very pale but not too rich, ideally in a limewash or similar finish to suit the render.

I'm thinking maybe duck egg blue or a warm pink, though I must admit
we've been tempted just to do the whole lot in Hardwick White because I
suspect it will cope well with the omnipresent gull splatter (sorry for
tmi :-) ).

The only other colour in the terrace (not pictured) is a soft mint green.

I think white/yellow/cream/beige are out entirely, and I'm generally not in favour of blue but could be persuaded by a warm blue with a touch of green or pink in it.

Any suggestions welcome. Photos of actual results are very helpful for me. TIA.

Have you thought of inverting the other project colours - ie if they use hardwick walls and bright white Windows and door - you could go bright white walls and hardwick Windows and door - so blended beautifully but noticeably a different property ?
Check that they are not planning a change of colours too first though !!!

I like your idea of inverting the other colours but as you can see there isn't really any colour going on anywhere. Except for the one mint house (just to the left of the frame of this photo) all the others are white w white trim. I really don't want to do anything bright white if for no other reason than the render just gets too dingy (the little lumps and bumps collect such a lot of dust and soot as well as the gull issue).

F&B haven't been much help which surprised me as I see so many houses in the country that use these dull dun/greys on woodwork, I'd assumed they'd have some ideas for walls.

Thank you minnie101 - I have a 1990's Charles Church house - it's one of those really difficult houses to get right, without literally starting again! I'm just going to work through room by room and hope it works - very daunting as I don't have a clue about interior design! You're going to see a lot of "help me" posts on here lol!

Hi, I was just looking at staircases for a project I am working on and came across the images of your hall and your post. I have read all the good comments but could not resist ... throwing a couple of things into the mix that you could consider (budget permitting) ... Oak Parquet flooring is lovely but sometimes the yellow tones often highlighted with sunlight and age affects the choices we make for the walls and banisters and we fancy a change. Replacing the floor would be expensive, however, a relatively cheap and easy option would be to employ a flooring company to sand your existing wood floors. They basically sand them back and then you can choose from a huge number of tones of wood that you would like them to stain/oil/varnish the floor. (It took my guys a couple of days to complete). With the floor in the tone you love... you can then look at the walls and banisters etc. I would recommend painting your current wood banisters that would offer a new look. You could paint the spindles and varnish/paint the banister in another colour i.e. black etc. I would potentially suggest painting the spindles in the same colour as the ceilings. In the F and B colour palette, they use strong white alongside Elephants breath, skimming stone and Dove Tail. I would paint the spindles/stair woodwork Strong White (estate eggshell) and the ceilings Strong White (matt emulsion). I would use the wallpaper you love on the ground floor in between all the doors for maximum effect and a cohesive look. Wallpaper would not take as much traffic on the ground floor walls as it would on the stairwell and could look fabulous. You would then paint the skirting boards , and door architraves in elephants breath, skimming stone , dove tail etc. (Modern Emulsion) Finally, the stair wall (opposite banisters) could either be painted in the same colour as the architrave/skirtings, or a complimentary colour from the palette (either Elephants breath, skimming stone, elephants breath etc.) (Modern Emulsion) Both options would look great. Modern Emulsion is good to use on the stair wall as you can easily wipe it down. Good luck with your refurb. :-)

Hello webuser_348360, Reeve.. because they are one of my trade companies... Their wood is really lovely.. I have all their samples displayed in my bedroom which is a feature on the design page on my website! I thought that you might like to look at a variety of lovely colours and textures that might be of interest, as there's so much more than just a natural coloured floor..... With the chalky whites... Acre, Shirting and White Lead are all lovely creamy warm whites.. Also Slaked Lime, but it's less creamy and can appear cool... LG is low VOC and water based.. so nice for the environment and easy on the brushes! : ))

Hey Jen, I'm still paralysed by indecision on the blinds/curtain front! Making do with the white roller blinds for now - but as the rest of the room comes together they look more and more shabby :(. Managed to choose a rug and some prints for above the bed frame so I'm making progress at least. Will post an update when the wardrobes are finished. If you're anywhere near London I'll let you know the company I'm using if they prove to be good. I think price-wise its reasonable for the slightly complicated design (having to work around an awkward narrow chimney). I've heard mixed things about the F&B paints - most of the negatives from decorators I've read has been about the wall paints rather than the eggshell designed for woodwork. It's too expensive for me to indulge most of the time but on a comparatively small area like this I think its probably worth splashing out. I've heard good things about Little Greene too and there's a shop pretty close to the F&B one on Marylebone High St so will look at both.

A pink similar in shade to this could work but it would be good to see a pic of next door to see the exact shade. A rose pink should also work with mint green but depends if you like the more subtle version or something with a bit more colour. I'm sure after you paint yours everyone else will follow suit!
