Bookshelves and painted floor

What brand of paint and colour were used on the bookshelves. Would this work without a white painted floor?

Thanks for the comments so far. I'm kind of thinking there's a hybrid option that isn't 1 or 2 and will probably cost a fortune, but until I find that solution, option 2 is definitely what I'm pulled towards. Oneplan, to answer your questions specifically: - The house is built on two floors - just three double bedrooms uptstairs. I'll be putting a small bathroom in upstairs as part of the project. - The "lobby" area is a vast overstatement on behalf of the estate agents when they were making the plan. "Pantry" would be a more appropriate word. Our builder mate suggested making the Pantry into a small shower and WC and converting the current downstairs bathroom into a utility room. - My kids are 4 and 5. - I haven't actually measured the porch up yet, although see comment below. - Regarding the question about the extension size. I borrowed the dimensions from a plan already submitted to the council for an exact same sized house (plans submitted before the govt relaxed planning rules). This size works because the garden is not so big. If I make the extension any bigger the garden will be really too small (and I want at least some space for the kids to run around in). You certainly have the height to carry such a look but I wonder whether you would lose the definition in some of that beautiful cornice? I like ceilings painted the same colour as the walls. I considered one shade lighter (ie ammonite) to have a slight contrast. You could also paint the cornice white and the ceiling cornforth but I think that is a more traditional look. On balance my favourite would be the cornice and ceiling painted one shade lighter. What have you done in the rest of the house with the ceilings?

MDF and softwood is fine. Ideally mdf should be edged or treated with shellac to prevent fluffy finish. However, the look is in the considered detail. There are several things you need to note on the one you like which will make all the difference to a good design. 1. The increased thickness of the shelves and cabinet uprights. 2. The door frame thickness should be in ratio to its width otherwise it will look too meagre 3. The inset moulding will be better as a belechion moulding to prevent visible cracking in the paintwork on the softwood. ( sometimes used with fielded panels ) 4 Where possible it is better to use the existing skirting detail as the kick-plate all around the design to meet up with the existing skirting 5. In this design 'laid on' doors would give an inferior look to inset doors with hinge butts. Unfortunately the doors have to be square and plumb for this to work ,which may challenge some carpenters. 6. The handles should suit the design and should not be placed at the top of the door . 7. The correct crown moulding and working top edging, although not immediately noticeable will make all the difference.

Hi all, Thank you for your comments; I appreciate them! Natasha - the units you have suggested are very much what I had in mind. We will have a shaker kitchen and the media unit would also be shaker style and would have 4-6 cupboards with the TV in the middle with book shelves either side. Part of the reason we kept a partial wall was to make the space more usable. I can’t envision how the fully open plan room will be able to meet all our needs, but I am open to ideas! I feel that open plan would be more impressive, but potentially less usable. With regards to the doors. I do plan to reverse the doors both into the kitchen and family room part, but couldn’t work out how to do it on the app I used for the floor plan. It is a 1920s house and we have the original doors which we are planning to keep. We are also keeping a lot of floor space as when the table is not extended, we still have young children with lots of Lego and trains etc. I plan for these to be hidden in the cupboards at bedtime. J - we haven’t installed the kitchen but we have ordered it and paid a big deposit. Some of the units are bespoke/irregular sizes and I don’t think we would be willing to change this.
