Fireplace or no fireplace?
Comments (5)Hello Angela, A photo of the room would be good.. I agree having not had a tv for nearly 10 years... I definitely hate seeing them in people's living rooms.. I would have a projector and pull down screen from ceiling... Well then back to the question at hand.. I'd say have a wood burner you can get one for as little as £250 and the pellet ones are far more.... The wood burning stoves are fantastic and as much as you might think you may not use it.. In winter there is nothing like having a proper wood burning I get 1 delivery of logs a year and I use them economically... I'm writing this in August and it looks like a monsoon outside! I'm glancing now at the fire and thinking.. Also can you not have your tv and a wood burner? The tv could be in a less overtly visible space.. . : ))...See MoreBig TV clashes with fireplace for centre stage!
Comments (2)Hi, When ever I design a room I always put the TV & fire together. The TV can be concealed if you don't want it as a feature. It can be automated if you have a good budget or put a piece of artwork over it that slides to the side if you want to keep it low tech. If its a modern room I connect it to a hard drive, apple, amazon or similar and use it as a huge digital picture frame. Family pictures, holiday photos, favourite artwork etc. Nothing worse than a blank screen. When ever I try to split the TV & fire too opposite walls the room never works properly. It's an unfortunate fact of life that the TV & the fire are focal points in the room and all the furniture is set accordingly. Here is a few ideas: Hope that helps, Martin: www.angel-martin.com...See Morefireplace surround - remove or paint?
Comments (11)I think the grate is worthy of an elegant surround if I'm honest. If that's not in budget I think I'd actually paint it black. I agree with forzaitalia it will look a lot better painted however the contrast in colour will highlight the "chunkiness" (can't think of another word ATM!). I appreciate it won't lighten the room although there are other ways of doing so and I don't suspect the fire will make a lot of difference. The one pictured (pinched from forzaitalia!) is similar to yours and I think it looks elegant...See Morefireplace TV or cinema screen?
Comments (18)This is a subjective question. Some people like the fireplace, some don’t. It’s personal taste. I personally really like it. It brings character & warmth & a focal point. Not everyone is fortunate to have a chimney so I would embrace it. But it is what you like that matters as you have to look at it! I personally would fit the largest TV you can fit in the larger r/h alcove - let us know the measurements of this alcove? Looks from the photo like you could get a 75” there? Maybe even 80+. I’d put a floating media style unit underneath (have a look at IKEA) with LED lighting. On the smaller left side alcove I would shelve it full height, again with some soft integrated led lighting. Shelves could be wood, glass, or have chrome/brass trims depending on the style of your decor. It doesn’t all need to be centralised & symmetrical- work with the room rather than against it. We have a large pull down projector screen which is only effective when sitting at the back of the room (6 metres away). I much prefer to watch a tv screen. There is no way a 200” screen would work in this size room (sorry). The pixies would appear blurred & your eyes will hurt. It would just be silly in a small room. A 75” is still absolutely enormous & great for films, especially if you plan some clever soft/dimmable LED lighting around the room to give you that cinema feel....See MoreUser
