Cloakroom decoration

My hubby and I have recently moved house and we need to tackle decorating our cloakroom (blank canvas).

The room is 1750 x 1425mm and has a very good natural light coming from the window even though is not south facing.

Any advice for paint colours, lighting, storage, etc would be so helpful.

I just finished decorating my downstairs 'lavatory '. It's quite small but I painted all the walls with Farrow & Ball Lulworth Blue (a deep chalky blue). The fixtures are white so I used white accessories and a small John Lewis chandelier lamp. I love the result.

I'm tired of deco-speak. 'Cloackroom (sic)' huh. It's a lavatory or at the very least a toilet. Nobody stores their clothes in there. I suppose you say people 'pass over' when they die too.

shari39 yes you're right. I've done this a couple of times now. Just attach it with a bead of clear silicon around the edge of the glass, ie. hold the glass in place, and then apply the bead around the edge.

I have pale grey tumbled marble on the floor and walls (up to sink level) in my small downstairs cloakroom and a large white framed mirror on the wall that faces you when you enter. The upper walls are currently white as I wasn't brave enough to embrace colour when I first created the space. But the room is crying out for (and will soon have) a rich, deep hue like the one in your picture. I think a dark F&B blue/grey with light grey tumbled marble slabs or other natural stone makes a stunning combination. Stone is a very practical material for floors that get wet a lot, too!

Yes i think the back door would be a good idea. We thought about making the current window into a door as you’ve suggested, it’s a low ceiling but could just about get away with it as it’s a cottage. I think that’s our other option that you’ve suggested but was going to separate the utility room in two so that we’d could get a toilet in and a small part of the utility. However that means changing the window Into 2 smaller ones and a lot more work (we’re trying to keep the cost down as much as possible!)

Hi when I was searching for tiles I saw the tile you have chosen complimented with metro tiles in quite a few different websites. You could do half wall in metro tiles perhaps then a nice mirror above the sink? Just a thought 😊

Hi Marwa,

What a great room. You have plenty of space for storage and can afford to go bolder in colour as it is a nice light room.

Marisol's room is great (well done Marisol) - a colour like this would work really well and add a very sophisticated look.

I would love to know the type of style you are looking for? Have you tried to look on Houzz for ideas and inspiration. There are some great images to help.

It is also not a great cost to have a room like this designed by an interior designer and many services (like our 'by the room' packages) come with 3D images so you can see the colour and space before you implement the design.

I hope this helps and look forward to seeing the end results.

I would definitely go for some form of drama. I love the fish wallpaper in one of the pics posted by the Big Bathroom Shop but anything bold would work. I'd go dark, too. If you don't do something statementy you'll end up with another version of what you have already. Be radical! Make everyone who uses it go "wow!". Loos are functional places; it's really great when they are raised above the ordinary.

Following this with interest as we've to decide on how to decorate our downstairs toilet too. It's small but reasonable size for what it is. I love this wallpaper and now trying to decide whether to do the whole space or just one wall. Definitely pick a bling wallpaper of some kind!

The colour of the picture frame in your loo is rather nice. Maybe start with painting walls in that colour? My cousin is a fan of Yuventus football team and he did his downstairs loo in their colours, black and white, and believe it or not it looks really good. Maybe choose something your love and go from there. I do love wacky wallpapers in downstairs loos.

For storage you could change the basin for one that has a cabinet under it.

You could do a fun design on the back wall (the toilet wall, in the space to the left of the toilet) with display/storage boxes, like these from Ikea, to hold loo rolls and guest towels.

I'd paint the walls in a dark grey and add alarge mirror

I always think a downstairs loo should be fantastic with pattern or drama or colour depending on the room. I also have one to decorate in my new house, but I've gone for a temporary neutral scheme until we can afford to get it refitted. I'll go for wallpaper eventually. You could go for a wallpaper too, maybe something with an all over motif.

I'm dying to find a client to use this wallpaper with - http://www.17patterns.com/jellyfish-wallpaper/! Because this space is such a transient space you can afford to go a bit wild and make it a talking point.

I've been tempted by that wallpaper, too. It's bold and dramatic and could look wonderful. I reckon it would work with a scandi look loo - with coffee coloured shelves perhaps? And accessories that tie in with it. I'd be tempted not to do the rest white - what about the dark blue or even the coffee or darker coffee colour? Perhaps you aren't used to using colour and are a bit worried about using too much? The days of doing one feature wall are long gone for many and experimenting with the loo gives you the chance to try it out without the risk. Regardless, this wallpaper's got masses of drama. Go for it!

I LOVE bathrooms/ toilets with wallpaper or some element of fun. I feel like people play like to play safe with the rest of their house, so bathrooms are the perfect opportunity to go a little crazy. Here is one of my clients bathrooms. It's a little bigger than yours but I think with all that natural light it could take a cheery design. Or just do one wall like Pat Oliver suggested.

I noticed that Occipinti - I think I read every word of your website including the interview with you about how you got into it, how you work and how you chose your business name, etc. All the designs are great. And, as I'm a passionate recycler, I love that you up cycle. Lots of sources up in Chester - a friend took me round when he was looking for unusual/used before furniture/accesssories.
