At studioJLA we just love this new range of lights from graypants. What do you think? Handcrafted from recycled cardboard, these lights add a touch of recycled luxury. We can't wait to use them on an upcoming project.

I don't mind the current colours although a greys and beiges tend to suck light out of a room, a brighter colour rather than just white will help. I agree with much of what Jill says above, with a few tweaks ... the lighting needs attention. The room needs some interest, colour and texture to create depth. Get a larger rug, more colourful, with organic pattern which draws the eye outward. Big enough to sit the furniture on. Pick up some of the colours from the new rug and get some cushions. A couple of plants would help with texture and add life to the room. I know you are using the mirrors to add light and space but the one under the stairs is just reflecting the underneath of the stairs ... try a colourful print of a pathway between trees for example, to draw the eye beyond the room otherwise it's a bit bland. The TV is just on a stand that is too small and a bit low, go for a wider piece or try positioning the unit against the other wall in that same corner so it is facing the sofas, then the TV won't look so out of balance. If you make the room a bit livelier and interesting the light issue won't be such a problem. Consider pale turquoise walls for example rather than just white and add some artwork.

Good points about the drawers, I agree they would look better moved to the end of the run. Then perhaps I could have doors that open over the corner of the breakfast bar to improve access. Although I was going to have bins in that end cupboard so it might not work after all. Currently considering scrapping the oven tower and maybe keeping our current freestanding oven (or getting a range if budget permits). I'm so indecisive and feeling the pressure as my husband just says yeah to everything I suggest without really thinking about it! The breakfast bar is currently 113cm plus any overhang so I can't work out of pendant lights would look a bit cramped over it? If so, perhaps just one central pendant light with spotlights. I quite like a more vintage style. I'll be keeping my green delonghi kettle and toaster so will try and work in colour to blend.

Thank you everyone, lots of food for thought @honeypoppet - I never knew this design technique existed, I’m worried it would look a bit too funky for my simple house and I think the radiator would get in the way of the beautiful ombré effect @yasminchopin - I never thought to use a piece of art, I thought to put up pictures but actually the art would bring the colours together. The radiator issue, and now that you’ve mentioned it, it really does stick out like a sore thumb but I could almost see past it with the wall half painted. And the more I stare at it the more it does seem to take away from the balance of the wall even with something hung above it @minnie & grouse - I never thought of that, it would have been a great idea! we’ve just repainted the bannisters from a dark mahogany stained colour to all white, I didn’t think to change the handrails, I might have to see how far time and budget allow as the carpets are going in next week As the walls are half painted I might complete it in a colour just to get a full visual and appease my soul that I took the right decision! then finally decide either way, but please do keep any last minute ideas coming, I’m certainly learning a thing or two along the way

Casino neon signs can be pretty hard to find. They're usually not on eBay or in antique shops, but in casino museums, where you'd think they might be. These all seem to have the same twenty or so generic signs from the 1950s and 60s. Most of it has been melted down for scrap. But I found some excellent stuff on https://goodvibesneon.com/. Also, these guys made me a few custom signs for my studio, and it's looking great. I am more than satisfied with the quality and the service, and they are looking 1:1 as the signs from the '40s.
