Can you please tell me what the cedar exterior is coated with?

I have recently extended a bach and the exterior cladding is cedar. Can anyone please recommend to me what I should coat the cedar with to protect it and keep it looking as natural as possible? The cedar shows various shades and I would love to retain this full range of tones and the natural colours of the cedar. Thank you :-)

For the cabins we used clear Wood X oil. In our experience we have had successful results with both Wood X and Dryden Woodoil. The cladding does require a substantial amount of re-coating every 2 years to preserve the quality of the timber.

Thanks, Donut. It has taken a long time, but we are finally getting towards the end. We decided to play it safe in the end, and installed hardwood sash windows that come factory spray painted in a warm white. They look really lovely, but now in contrast, the exterior render looks so awful that we will have to do that now! (Bit back to front as this should have been done before the windows, but things don't always work out as they should!). Also, keep meaning to remove that nasty little black plant pot which I only ever seem to notice on photos...

Hi Claire, Your more than welcome. The advice to use a "local" architect is a good one, he will know the area, the various legislation in force for your district and he should be on talking terms with the local councillors so his advise will save you a lot of time. I would advise you to ask him to do a full survey, interior and exterior, ideally you need an architect that can transfer the survey to ACAD format. (Make it digital)... Even if your only doing the front at this stage its good to have the existing interiors drawn up so you can use them later. When your architect has drawn up the front of the house, please feel free to send it to me and I'll have a tinker to see if I can fine tune it for you. Design "all" the interior layouts at the same time even if you will be doing each room stage by stage. If you do them individually the design will be fragmented. The first mock up looks the best to me. The issue is that digital renderings don't show how the light affects the colour so just bear that in mind. I think the black looks traditional and so a warm grey would be more sympathetic if you want to modernise it slightly. Colours look much lighter on exteriors so it can be a good idea to test things that are slightly darker than you might consider initially.
