Suitable colours to lighten dark kitchen worktop

We have Just moved house and the kitchen worktops are mottle black/brown granite. Don't really like them, but we would like to give kitchen a make over, keeping things light.... Any thoughts on best cupboard door colours and walls/tiles/flooring. Thanks

Hi Elizabeth,

I proposed a colour scheme for you as that is usually where people struggle to "match" the granite. I proposed Farrow & Ball Colours but most paint counters will match to Farrow & Ball Anyway, if you want to keep costs down.

I included two options for the lower half. You said you wanted to keep it light and the wall and top cabinet colour I proposed would work below as well. I just thought it would be nice to have a darker colour option just in case you changed your mind.

Don't forget that high gloss surfaces will bounce light around the room. This means that lighting and the type of finish you propose will be critical to the end result. Also be ware if you are painting the cupboards yourself that silk paint will show up every imperfection!

Showed every tiny speck of dust, and, as it was a polished finish, it also smeared when wiped with a clean cloth! I was constantly cleaning it. I had a very bright kitchen but it still made it somewhat dark. Looked lovely though :-)

Hi We have fitted Honed Granite kitchen worktops for our customers previously and for those who want the look but don't want the extra up keep of a honed finish then we offer customers the Sensa Moak which is a black suede finished granite which is has a great sealant and easier to look after. I am choosing a black kitchen and found the discussion very useful. As this discussion is 3 years old I am assuming you have been using your black kitchen for a couple of years now. Please can you let me know how you are finding it? I have been told by many people that black shows stains and scratches easily, so can be very hard to maintain. I do a lot of cooking, and hate cleaning. Am I making the wrong choice going for black?

I think you've been given bad advice by the wood staining company. I have a wooden worktop in one of my rentals, so, I need to make that look good every time someone new moves in. It's a standard wood block worktop. It used to be a pale to mid tone colour. I decided that it would look a little more contemporary to go dark to match new flooring that I put in. I washed it down with meths to start with to remove as much of the old stain as possible and then let it dry for a couple of days. I then sanded it back down ( not easy around the sink, but do'able ). I then put on a new dark stain and oil, Osmo tint ( Terra ). Sorted and looks great. It was originally this colour, then faded due to the glass roof:- This is it sanded back, re-tiled and prepped:- As you see it's much lighter. It then got stained and oiled twice:- I must confess, that Mrs Math did the brunt of that project, she did all the tiling and stain / oil, I just did a bit of sanding one day and then went off to another job. Well done Mrs Math!

I would always recommend testing each colour in the space. Light does change the colour a lot more than most people can imagine. Good luck. Can't wait to see images!

Hi Elizabeth, it will be helpful if you can put some under cabinet lighting over the worktops. These can take the form of either Halogen or LED. They are great for lighting the worktops and will make any little sparkles in them look great!

Changing the cooker splashback to stainless steel would help bounce light around too.
