Wondering what to put around this plant?

I'd like to surround it with some kind of brick effect but not sure what. Any ideas?

Hi

The Cordyline you have planted will get a bit taller over time so you could put a hard detail around the base of it, but I'd be tempted to by three small ground cover shrubs that will tolerate the shade. Perhaps something like Hebe rakaiensis or Euonymus 'Emerald n Gold'. These will naturally spread and create a lower level of interest and just grow over the gravel area in a neat ring. They can also be pruned to keep the shape. If you wanted to go a bit more formal, you could plant a ring (square or circle) of Buxus sempervirens.

I think i'd be tempted to put in a raised bed against the house. Extra alpines and grasses in the lower bed and then carry on the theme with some low level plants in the upper raised bed. I'd steer away from pots as a lot of plants just don't tolerate them well, but most will do really well in a better bed of soil.

Planters would look nice. Although, to save on expense, you could just extend the beds out a little and get creative with different height plants. You need to treat the fence panels to some good dark creocote to lengthen their life span and provide a good back drop for the plants to pop out. Creating a planter or bed in front of the sorage area to disguise it will also help. It detracts from your beautiful new summer house, and, helps to make that the focal point. Plants stand out far better against a dark creocoted fence. Must get out and get that bind weed !

Thanks everyone, we went for the oak corner unit you suggested T Gray for the time being on account of the toddler, our unwillingness to put holes in the walls lest they fall down and my partner pointing out that we couldn't cover the sockets as the unit would stick out. It will look great with a plant on it when we get round to it!!

Thank I you so much everyone. Daisy, I’m thinking the same as I can face into the room with everyone else while I’m cooking and watch TV etc, but my husband does have the concerns of people sitting around it near the hob... that he cooks lol, I guess that depends on the size that has yet to be determined. Unfortunately the area around my sink is never clear of dishes in a house with kids...so would definitely need A a bigger sink as suggested and B the dishwasher right underneath which I hadn’t really thought about to be honest. So a sink would also need greater consideration as this may appear messy in the middle of the room. It would be a gas burner hob not induction, so don’t know if that makes a difference to the extractor. Thanks, food for thought

See how you go with the plant. What direction you take will rest on how you like your room to feel. A simple plant with a piece of art above for a clean simple feel in a more Scandi manner, or find items such as Sonia's bookcase and reading chair suggestion to help fill the room for a more layered feel.. Take your time building your room with pieces you like - a room with pieces you have collected will be warmer to you than a currated room that doesn't speak to you. Often times when we move the starkness of a new location makes us feel we need to fill, it will fill organically over time and then you'll think how did it end up with so much!

Personally I would soften it with planting but otherwise you could lay a nice circle of stones around the cordyline or random rocks to provide interest?

I also think you need more planting which would negate the need for brickwork

You could replant the cordyline into a tall pot and surround it with trailing ivy and bedding plants- -pink begonias and white trailing lobelia for summer and cyclamens for winter.

The corners of your plot can be dug over in a quadrant shape, planted with lime green dwarf conifers surrounded by purple heucheras.
