nice worktop. could you give an idea of the cost please

Concrete worktops are a nice alternative to all the granite and quartz people use these days but I do think they can be quite expensive for what they are. could you give me a rough idea of the cost of the ones in the pictures? also is there a weight concern with this material? Thank you

The
price of concrete countertops depends on a few factors such as
thickness and the template required etc. A ball park figure is between
£760-£820 + VAT/sq. metre.

Hmm... as the owner of a black, white&red kitchen, I feel I should defend that combination of colours. I think it looks quite neat and not at all hard to live with. But we went for matt units, to neutralise the gloss of the red glass/units.However, it could be a family affliction, as my MIL's kitchen is also a combination of dark grey and red...

Here are my go-to evergreen shrubs: Choisya ternata (you can also use the gold variety 'Sundance') - keep it clipped into a mounded to control size, beautiful, scented white flowers in summer, Osmanthus heterophyllus 'Goshiki' - looks a bit like holly and very tough, again, keep clipped - it won't grow too large and stays in a tight shape, Myrtus communis - again, white flowers, again holds a nice shape, but keep clipped so it doesn't get too big, Hebe pinguifolia 'Sutherlandii' - is a low growing mound forming Hebe with white flowers in summer, doesn't need pruning, pair the Hebe with Phormium 'Bronze Baby' for contrast - it's a smaller Phormium and hardier than some. Use some Hydrangeas and Paeonies for a spot of colour. I would not use Cordeline as they eventually grow a stem and get very large and leggy. Put in some grasses for texture - depending on how big you want to go. Smaller grasses - Pennisetum 'Hamelyn', Deschampsia cesspitosa, Stipa tenuissima. Larger grasses - Mischanthus, Calamagrostis. Cut back in late winter - very easy to look after. Instead of annuals use low-growing perennials - die back in winter, re-emerge in summer, so need to re-plant each year. My favourites - Geranium 'Rozanne', Sedum 'Purple Emperor', Geranium 'Dragonsheart', Eryngium 'Bourgatii', Vinca minor, Teucrium lucidris, Heuchera 'Obsidian'. If you want some taller perennials use Salvia 'Caradonna', Helenium 'Wyndley', Kniphofia 'Tawny King', Veranicastrum 'Apollo', Echinacea 'Purpurea', Aster frikartii 'Monch', Iris 'Butter and Sugar'. Plant in minimum clumps of 3 and upwards in odd numbered groups. Add some early flowering bulbs and you should have colour year-round. Go onto the Crocus web site for a bit more inspiration on what to plant.

Keep the tree, reshape and reduce the height. It would be a nice area in the shade to sit on a hot day and have a drink, tipple of choice, and read a good book. Extend the terrace out from the house with quality decking, doesn't have to be all the way across, just enough to fit a table and chairs and position you in the sun. Wide steps down to garden, no balustrading as this makes it feel closed in. Keep the steps wide and shallow. Maybe create a raised bed level with the deck on the other side or each side with sleepers to give some nice foliage and colour. Don't use grooved or reeded deck as this holds onto the dirt and makes it harder to maintain, go for the best you can afford, hardwood or cedar or even composite. keep us updated. Ian

Quick and easy way to get a comparison quote, look up a quote on DIY kitchens... you put in the size choose the worktop, cut, cut outs etc and then it gives you a price there and then. That sounds reasonable to me though. We’re going with a silestone quartz. Has a very subtle marble. You can also order samples from DIY to look at them or do tests re staining etc. There’s also a Houzz story somewhere about different kitchen worktops! :-)
