Oak table for the garden

Has anyone ever used an oak dining table for a garden table? Just wondering what is weathers like? And if it would last ok outside? Thinking of giving it a whitewash grey look. Looking for advice before I purchase a second hand one. Thanks

If you are planning to leave a garden table out in all weathers, ideally the planks of the top would have small gaps running between them to allow for the inevitable swelling and shrinkage of the wood. So a table like this would show some shaping pretty quickly if left outside. But maybe that's the look you want? If you sanded back the wax or varnish, oak won't take long too long to get the silvered look - maybe a season? Good luck with your search!

As promised, here is the response received just now from the supplier. I await your comments with interest- Hi, Good day to you. Our suppliers have come back to us with the following comments"Firstly sorry for the delay in replying to your email, we have recently returned from our 2 week Summer Shutdown…. With reference to your email regarding the WN206 Nest of Tables, unfortunately this will happen because the furniture is manufactured from Oak wood and when the timber oxidises with the natural light the furniture will mellow and become darker, so if this area has not been exposed it will remain the original colour from purchase. We do not stain our furniture only apply a 5% durable dull laquer sheen. We could offer to sand back the table top and repolish, but you would need to collect the item from the customer and deliver to our factory in Newton le Willows, however this would be chargeable to yourselves. Please advise on how you would like to proceed? Regards,

Personally I wouldn't change the wood color, but agree with changing the seat fabric. I think the chairs and table bring character in a modern setting. The current fabric is a very traditional neutral beige making it hard to envisage in a modern setting, switching the fabric will make a big difference. You were thinking about a glass top, if you were to go for a clear glass, you could modernise by using material or paper under the glass to change the top surface yet still have the wonderful legs on show. Using a paper or material just resting on the table top not attached, will protect it from damage.

I want it to look aged but don't want it warping, good point about having the gaps, think I'll have to look for something like that. Not sure an old dining table will work then. Thanks for your advice.
